Itri between the Via Appia and the Aurunci Mountains
Itri reveals its character at the intersection of an ancient road, mountain trails and local history. The section of the Via Appia that runs through Itri preserves an ancient basalt pavement and leads through the picturesque Sant’Andrea gorges, parallel to the modern Via Appia Nuova. Along the Via Appia towards Fondi are centuries-old olive groves, citrus orchards and typical Mediterranean vegetation. The town’s character therefore extends from Roman traces to a distinctive landscape.

Via Appia and the history of banditry
The Museum of Brigandage is located in Itri along the ancient Via Appia. Its exhibition is divided into three sections: the origins of banditry, the bandit in the collective imagination, and the bandit in everyday life. Special recognition is given to Michele Pezza, known as Fra Diavolo. The museum thus provides the town with a distinctive cultural and historical feature.
The archaeological remains along the Via Appia running through Itri include rest stations, known as postes, which were used for changing horses, polygonal walls, mausoleums, bridges and villas. There is also an opus incertum cistern dating from the 1st century BC, an example of Roman hydraulic engineering. The remains therefore encompass both travel facilities and structures and technical installations.
Mountain trails through Mediterranean landscapes
The CAI 917 La Valle di Itri–Monte Orso trail begins in La Valle in the municipality of Itri and climbs through typical Mediterranean scrub and holm-oak forest to the Raella karst plateau. The trail to the Santuario della Madonna della Civita leads through the Aurunci Mountains over paved paths and steeper ascents.
The sanctuary and paths through the town
The Santuario della Madonna della Civita rises on the hill of Monte Fusco. The first records of the building date from 1147. In 1491, the sanctuary acquired its present form. The span of time from the first records to its present form gives the building a clearly perceptible historical depth.
The interesting footpath to Castello di Itri begins at Porta Mamurra, passes through the Jewish quarter of Vico Giudea and climbs to the upper part of the town. From the terrace of Castello di Itri, there is a panorama over the Riviera di Ulisse.
Flower artworks and spring bonfires
The Infiorata di Itri has already been held more than thirty times and decorates the streets of the historic center with geometrically arranged floral artworks depicting religious and secular scenes. The tradition of the Fuochi di San Giuseppe in Itri takes place in mid-March; its bonfire marks the feast of Saint Joseph and the beginning of spring.
