Sabaudia: Coast, Lakes and Città del Razionalismo
Accommodation in Sabaudia
Sea, coastal dunes, lake landscapes and a preserved rationalist urban layout give Sabaudia an unusually diverse character. When choosing a hotel in Sabaudia, it is worth determining your main focus: Would you mainly like to experience the coast, explore nature and wetlands, or combine museums, historic sites and architecture? The town’s attractions offer specific points of interest for each of these preferences.
Between sandy beaches, coastal dunes and Lago di Paola
The Mare di Sabaudia offers 15 kilometres of fine sand; the beaches are lined by a coastal dune approximately 200 metres wide. Another defining waterscape is Lago di Paola. It is part of a complex of coastal lakes and wetlands that has been designated a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The lake is 6.7 kilometres long and separated from the Tyrrhenian Sea by a sandy dune approximately 200 metres wide.
The local economy is also connected to the water: extensive production of clams, known as “vongola verace”, takes place along the shores of Lago di Paola. This direct link to the lagoon landscape adds a regional aspect to the natural and coastal themes, without implying any particular gastronomic offering.
Experience nature and understand Parco Nazionale del Circeo
The main visitor centre of Parco Nazionale del Circeo is located within Sabaudia’s built-up area. The Sentiero Natura begins at the Centro Visitatori di Sabaudia, with marked rest areas and information panels explaining the main features of the forest’s wildlife and vegetation. Reconstructions of a “Lestra” and a charcoal kiln there also illustrate the historical relationship between people and the park area.
The Museo Naturalistico del Parco Nazionale del Circeo covers an area of approximately 350 square metres. It gives visitors an overview of the protected area’s ecological and historical values. Those who wish to view the development of the Pontine Plain from another perspective can find documents at the Centro di Documentazione sull'Istruzione e la Sanità nelle paludi pontine about efforts to provide the population with medical assistance and education. The centre can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a forest path; information panels there explain the relationship between people and the environment from prehistoric times to the present day.
Townscape, museums and historic sites
Sabaudia has preserved its original urban and architectural layout and is also known as the “Città del Razionalismo”. A suitable place to learn more about the history of Sabaudia and its surrounding area is the Centro di Documentazione “Angiolo Mazzoni”. It combines a historical, project-related and photographic archive with the “Feliciano Iannella” town library. The centre is housed in Sabaudia’s former post office, designed by the architect and engineer Angiolo Mazzoni.
The Museo Civico del Mare e della Costa “Marcello Zei” presents traces of prehistoric people who lived along the coast. It also offers an interactive tour with practical observation tasks as well as small discovery activities and challenges. This allows visitors to explore the coastal area not only historically, but also through their own observations.
On the eastern shore of Lago di Sabaudia lies the Parco archeologico della Villa di Domiziano in Parco Nazionale del Circeo. The complex comprises three visible and well-preserved areas. The Santuario di Santa Maria della Sorresca also stands on the shore of Lago di Paola and already existed before the 10th century. The church of Santissima Annunziata houses the “Cappella reale”, which Queen Margherita di Savoia donated to the town of Sabaudia in the 1930s. It was originally located in Palazzo Margherita in Rome.
