Rocca Massima between Forest and Open Spaces

Rocca Massima lies on a hill between the Monti Lepini and overlooks the Pontine Plain; the town is situated at an elevation of about 750 metres. The road to Rocca Massima winds uphill through holm oak and oak forests. The combination of the forested ascent and the expansive views already characterises the town’s setting.

Churches and Medieval Traces

The stone-paved, ascending lanes contain traces of possible origins dating back to the 7th century AD. The medieval Rocca of Rocca Massima was commissioned by the Annibaldi family. The Chiesa San Michele Arcangelo was built towards the end of the 15th century by expanding an older church dating from the 13th century.

The Chiesa San Michele Arcangelo consists of a single-nave layout, a barrel-vaulted ceiling and an apse with frescoes of the four patron saints by Mariani of Velletri. The main altarpiece depicts Saint Michael and is a copy of the original by Guido Reni.

The apse corresponds to one of Rocca Massima’s defensive and observation towers from the Annibaldi period at the beginning of the 13th century. The mechanical organ was installed in 1999 and inaugurated with a concert on 24 October of the same year; it became the centrepiece of an international organ event series. In 2004, the church was enriched with a monumental marble Stations of the Cross by the sculptor Mario Toffetti.

The Chiesetta del Carmine is a 17th-century chapel located next to the launch platform of the Flying in the Sky zip line.

Trails, Forest and Nature

CAI Trail 736, “Flying in the sky”, begins and ends in Rocca Massima. It is 9.3 kilometres long, with an ascent and descent of 400 metres each, and takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. The T tourist loop, by contrast, is an easy 2.5-kilometre walk around the historic centre. The two route formats differ considerably and can be compared when planning your day.

The Rocca Massima area is home to wild orchids, Mediterranean maquis, chestnut forests, marrons and porcini mushrooms. On the higher slopes along the route to Monte Lupone, there are ancient beech forests and expansive views over the Gulf of Naples and the mountains of Abruzzo.

Stories and Living Memory

The Parco della Memoria was created in 2000 on the initiative of the Pro Loco. Families dedicate trees there to the memory of deceased loved ones or to celebrate the birth of a child. Every year around 10 August, the park hosts a poetic recital evening entitled “Le poesie della memoria”.

The Grotta dell’Angiol d’oro is associated with a local story that has been passed down for more than a century and concerns an event from the late 19th century. The historic cellar associated with the story is still referred to as the Cantina della Gorgana or Cantina dell’Angiol d’oro.

Local Flavours

At the Sagra dei Marroni, marrons and wine can be sampled at the stand run by the organising association. Lunch and dinner are also available in the square.
