Anticoli Corrado lies on a natural terrace in the Monti Ruffi, overlooking the Aniene Valley. The interplay of narrow streets, cultural sites and paths through the Monti Ruffi presents different facets of a stay.
Art in a Historic Setting
Since the late 19th century, an increasing number of artists spent time in Anticoli Corrado and rented studios there for varying periods. The Civico Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea is housed in the rooms of the Palazzo Baronale. The palace was built on a rocky fortress that Corrado d’Antiochia fortified in the 12th century.
The museum preserves more than 700 works by artists who stayed in Anticoli Corrado and donated their works. In this way, the museum’s modern and contemporary art is connected with a historic building and the history of the town, without requiring the two impressions to be considered separately.
Town Center and Chiesa di San Pietro
The historic center of Anticoli Corrado is characterized by medieval arches, narrow streets and noble coats of arms on the portals. The details of the buildings make a walk through the town an encounter with various traces of its history.
The Chiesa di San Pietro was built around the 11th century and extended in the 15th century. It features Cosmatesque inlay work on the altars and floor. Its paintings show a strong influence of Piero della Francesca in their architectural perspectives and depictions of the Church Fathers.
Sculpture, Trails and Thermal Waters
The Fontana di Arturo Martini was created in 1926 in Piazza delle Ville; it is also known as “L’Arca di Noè”. The Sentiero delle Modelle begins at Via Olivella in Anticoli Corrado and complements the historical and artistic impressions with an opportunity to explore the surrounding area on foot.
The Laghetto dell’Oriella has sulfurous thermal waters. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a rural road near the Aniene River; the route is marked with the trail sign of the Cammino dell’Aniene. At the Laghetto, visitors can swim in the warm thermal waters and take thermal mud baths. Excursions and mountain bike tours are also possible in the Monti Ruffi.
Regional Cuisine and Getting There
Cazzaregli are a traditional pasta made from wheat and corn flour in Anticoli Corrado. Fried pizza and aniseed rings are among the typical dishes of the town’s gastronomic tradition. These dishes add a local culinary focus to the picture of Anticoli Corrado.
To reach the Civico Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, take the A24 Roma–L’Aquila motorway to the Vicovaro Mandela exit. About 6 km after the toll station, turn right at the junction for Anticoli Corrado and then continue for about 3 km.
