The Pineta di Castel Fusano as a Protected Area
The Pineta di Castel Fusano urban park is a protected area established by Lazio in 1980. Since 1996, the Pineta di Castel Fusano has been part of the Litorale Romano nature reserve. At the same time, the pine forest is home to a diverse range of wildlife, partly due to its proximity to the Castel Porziano Presidential Estate. In addition to its location on the coast, this natural area therefore has a clearly documented history of protection and landscape conservation.
Via Severiana and Villa di Plinio
The archaeological area of Via Severiana and Villa di Plinio is located in the Pineta di Castel Fusano in Lido di Ostia and within the Litorale Romano state nature reserve. It includes a section of the Via Severiana, an ancient coastal road, of which only limited basalt sections remain visibly preserved. Fragments of the basalt paving of this ancient road are also still visible in the Pineta di Castel Fusano urban park.
The so-called Villa di Plinio is a Roman maritime villa complex with a square peristyle dating from the Julio-Claudian period. A peristyle is an inner courtyard surrounded by columns. In one of the villa's thermal baths, there is a black-and-white mosaic depicting Neptune with a trident in a chariot drawn by two hippocamps, surrounded by sea creatures. The depiction of the sea god with marine animals also reflects the maritime character of the villa complex in its subject matter. Castello Chigi (Villa Chigi-Sacchetti) is a fortified villa in the Pineta di Castel Fusano urban park.
A Time-Limited Notice about Villa di Plinio
A temporary closure of the so-called Villa di Plinio was announced from August 1, 2024, for the works planned as part of the PNRR. If you are specifically planning to visit this historic area, you should therefore check the current visitor status.
Beach and Bathing History
On the shore of Castel Fusano, SPQR Beach was transformed from a beach subject to a maritime concession into a freely accessible beach. Bathing establishments began to appear on Lido di Castel Fusano Beach in the period after the Second World War. In this way, the coast complements the protected pine forest and ancient remains with its own, more recent layer of development.
