Ariccia between Piazza, Palace and Local Cuisine

Ariccia combines its historic town center with architecture, music and a culinary tradition. Piazza della Repubblica, formerly known as Piazza di Corte, is considered the elegant heart of Ariccia and the starting point for exploring the town. From here, visitors can discover a townscape in which buildings, squares and pathways are connected with the history of the place.

Palazzo Chigi and Piazza di Corte

Palazzo Chigi was redesigned as an architectural hybrid of palace, castle and villa. Inside, it preserves paintings, sculptures and furnishings dating primarily from the 17th and 18th centuries. Piazza di Corte is also home to Locanda Martorelli, a historic building that was a stop on the Grand Tour of Italy in the 19th century. The Collegiata dell’Assunta is also part of the redesign of this square commissioned by Alessandro VII.

Parkland and Sacred Architecture

Parco Chigi embodies the historical concepts of a sacred forest and a walled hunting park. In this parkland stands the Uccelliera, built around 1628 by the Savelli on a Roman quarry and later transformed by the Chigi into a picturesque ruin in a garden. Another historic point of reference is the Santuario di Galloro: its construction began in 1624 after an image of the Virgin Mary was found in the area around Ariccia. Gian Lorenzo Bernini redesigned the sanctuary; he is also credited with its façade and the interior decoration of the dome.

The Ponte Monumentale as a Defining Structure

The Ponte Monumentale was built between 1847 and 1854 under Pope Pius IX, based on a design by the architect Ireneo Aleandri. Measuring 312 meters in length and 59 meters in height, it replaced the steep ramps of the old Via Appia. Its dimensions make the bridge an essential part of navigating Ariccia and a structure where the historic connection between urban development and transportation history can be read.

Parking, Funicolare and Routes to the Center

Those arriving by car can find free parking beneath the Ponte Monumentale. The Funicolare di Ariccia connects Parcheggio Bernini with the historic center and Palazzo Chigi. This establishes two specific reference points for planning a visit: the parking area beneath the monumental bridge and the historic center with its cultural attractions. Especially for a stay focused on the palace, piazza and the town’s history, this connection is part of practical orientation on site.

Porchetta and the September Date

Ariccia’s culinary character is particularly evident in its Porchetta di Ariccia. Since 2011, it has held the status of a protected geographical indication, or IGP, and is seasoned with rosemary, garlic and black pepper. The Sagra della Porchetta began in 1950 and takes place every year on the first Sunday in September. If you would like to combine culture and regional cuisine, this event provides a clear seasonal reference point for planning your trip.

Music and Views

Music is also part of the town’s cultural profile: the Concerti dell’Accademia degli Sfaccendati have been held at Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia since 2000. In addition, the route from the historic center leads to a belvedere, a viewing terrace overlooking the landscape of the Parco Naturale Regionale dei Castelli Romani. This makes it possible to combine architecture and concert culture with views of the surrounding landscape, without losing sight of the historic center as a point of reference.
