Carpineto Romano: Medieval Center, Monte Semprevisa and Local Cuisine

Carpineto Romano combines culture, mountain landscapes and local cuisine. For your individual trip to Italy, the town offers various perspectives, from historic buildings and exhibitions to regional dishes and festivals.

Culture in the Historic Center

The historic center has largely preserved its medieval appearance. On Piazza Regina Margherita, the Collegiata has an imposing 18th-century façade; the monumental fountain by Tripisciano is also located there. Palazzo Pecci was built between the 12th and 18th centuries and is the birthplace of Pope Leo XIII.

Palazzo Aldobrandini houses the Museo Civico La Reggia dei Volsci. The Museo dei Cimeli di Papa Leone XIII is a permanent exhibition in the former Church of San Nicola. It displays papal vestments, personal items, manuscripts and the fountain pen used to sign the 1891 encyclical “Rerum Novarum”.

The Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo has an early 17th-century cloister with 28 fresco lunettes depicting the story of Saint Francis. The monastery of the Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo was founded in 1610. Reformed Franciscans worked there and opened a widely known general school for philosophy and natural sciences. The Chiesa di Sant’Agostino has been documented since the 13th century.

Monte Semprevisa and the Karst Landscape

At 1,536 m, Monte Semprevisa is the highest peak of the Monti Lepini and offers beautiful hikes through wooded, ridge, karst and panoramic sections. The usual hiking trail to Monte Semprevisa begins at Pian della Faggeta above Carpineto Romano. On a 1,421 m-high panoramic terrace stands an iron cross commissioned by Pope Leo XIII for the 1990 Jubilee.

The municipal area also contributes to the distinctive landscape: it includes 264 caves, accounting for 14% of the caves in Lazio. At the same time, it is credited with having the highest number of caves among the municipalities of Lazio.

Pastoral Cuisine and Festivals

Local traditions include the particularly widespread production of cheese, especially from sheep’s or goat’s milk. The typical cuisine of Carpineto Romano is pastoral in character; milk is essential for typical dishes such as polenta in bianco.

The Pallio della Carriera is held in August in honor of the patron saint Sant’Agostino. The feast held as part of the Pallio della Carriera is accompanied by a themed menu that changes annually and is offered by the local inns, a historic procession and original 17th-century music. Thus, when planning a trip to Carpineto Romano, culture, nature and cuisine are brought together through specific places, landscape features and traditional forms of celebration.
