Cave between Culture, Nature and Living Tradition

Cave brings together cultural sites, protected landscapes and local traditions. The Santuario della Madonna del Campo, the Museo Lorenzo Ferri, the Parco Comunale di Cave and traditional events each offer a different focus. For culture enthusiasts, Cave combines a sanctuary and a museum with a protected park as well as local festivals and products.

Culture between Sanctuary and Museum

Access to the Santuario della Madonna del Campo is free from the road; the site is free of architectural barriers. A fresco of the Virgin Mary is preserved in the crypt of the Santuario della Madonna del Campo.

The Museo Lorenzo Ferri consists of a main area with a collection of the artist’s works and a separate area dedicated to the Presepe Monumentale. The main area is located in the former Ospedale Mattei at Via Cavour 23. There, the museum houses an extensive collection of plaster casts representing different phases of the artist’s career from the 1920s to the 1970s. The Presepe Monumentale is located in the underground rooms of the former Augustinian monastery. The two areas therefore have different focuses: the main area belongs to the collection of works, while the separate area is dedicated to the Presepe Monumentale.

Protected Landscape with Villa and Spring

The protected area of the Parco Naturale Monumentale Villa Clementi includes the historic villa, tree-lined avenues, fountains and the Fonte di Santo Stefano spring. The Parco Naturale Monumentale Villa Clementi and the Fonte di Santo Stefano together form the protected Parco Comunale di Cave. The villa, avenues, fountains and spring are therefore part of the same protected setting, which is collectively known as the Parco Comunale di Cave.

Chestnuts, Products and Living Traditions

For centuries, Cave has been known for producing chestnuts, walnuts and hazelnuts.

The Sagra della Castagna e dei prodotti tipici locali takes place on the last weekend of October. For planning the timing of a visit around the event, the last weekend of October is therefore the specific reference point. In Cave’s annual calendar, the Sagra thus represents a fixed date rather than merely a general autumn period.

The Sacra Rappresentazione is also part of Cave’s defining tradition: the people of Cave have kept it alive continuously for more than 140 years. The people of Cave are therefore the bearers of a tradition whose uninterrupted continuation spans more than 140 years.

Routes and Surroundings

The ancient site of Temple de Fortune is located in the immediate surroundings of Cave. In addition, the Via Francigena del Sud includes Cave on its Prenestina-Casilina direct route. For culture enthusiasts, this creates two distinct historical connections: Temple de Fortune is located in the immediate surroundings, while Cave itself lies on the Prenestina-Casilina direct route of the Via Francigena del Sud.
