Formello: History in the Landscape

Formello reveals its history in several layers, from the Orsini watermill to the aristocratic residence in Palazzo Chigi. The Mola di Formello is a watermill built by the Orsini in the 14th century and remained in operation until the 1950s. In the second half of the 15th century, Palazzo Chigi was transformed from a defensive building into an aristocratic residence. At the Mola, the focus is on its use as a watermill, while at Palazzo Chigi it is on its later role as a residence.

Villa Versaglia was designed by Cardinal Flavio Chigi as a summer residence in the Formello countryside. The complex includes a chapel dedicated to Saint Francis de Sales. The combination of summer residence and chapel brings two functions together in one complex: a secular use and a religious dedication.

Archaeology, Art and the Via Francigena

The Catacomba di Monte Stallone is a Christian funerary monument dating from the 4th to the 5th century AD. As a Christian funerary monument from this period, it expands Formello’s historical themes with a sacred site.

At the Museo dell'Agro Veientano, the Sala Velly displays changing exhibitions of engravings by Jean-Pierre Velly (1943–1990). The museum also includes a version of a 13th-century tower redesigned by Andrea Bruno, with an exhibition on the Via Francigena. The Via Francigena passes through the Formello area. The tower thereby connects the museum’s historic architecture with the theme of the Via Francigena.

The Centro per l'incisione e la grafica d'arte is dedicated to promoting graphic arts, drawing and printmaking.

Valle del Sorbo and Regional Cuisine

Valle del Sorbo lies between Campagnano di Roma and Formello. In the Campagna Romana, it is characterized by tuff gorges through which the Cremera River flows. Because of its high natural and environmental value, Valle del Sorbo is protected as a Site of Community Importance, or SIC for short.

Formello’s local cuisine includes Padellaccia, a spicy preparation of pork sausage meat cooked in a pan. In Formello, Crostata di porsaraghi refers to a local cake or dessert made with fruit known for its characteristically sweet-and-sour flavor. The two specialties add a savory and a fruity accent to the local cuisine, respectively; Padellaccia is spicy, while the crostata is sweet and sour.

Access and Planning

For day planning, the different access rules must be considered separately. The grounds of Villa Versaglia are accessible only with advance reservation. The Catacomba di Monte Stallone can be visited on the last Sunday of each month as part of a guided tour. Anyone planning to visit both historic sites must therefore arrange a reservation-only visit and a monthly scheduled guided-tour appointment independently of one another.
