Discover Tre Pontoni: History, Art and Hiking Trails
Tre Pontoni is part of the Ponte Storto–Valle del Tevere area. This area is associated with the Grotta Colonna quarry complex, which is depicted on a map by Mattei from 1674. Tre Pontoni combines Rocca Colonna and the church art of Santa Maria Assunta and San Sebastiano with the hiking trail network of Veio Regional Park.
Historic Buildings and Art
Rocca Colonna was transformed from a fortified military complex into a Renaissance palace. At Rocca Colonna, the Chapel of San Silvestro was restored after its frescoes had been concealed beneath several layers of paint. These two aspects make the complex interesting for visitors who wish to consider historical development and preserved sacred art together.
The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta houses a wooden Salvatore triptych from 1507, attributed to Antoniazzo Romano. The Loggia Pinta in Castelnuovo di Porto dates from 1568 and is attributed to Federico Zuccari. The spectrum thus ranges from a single Renaissance work to a historic loggia. The 1507 triptych and the 1568 Loggia Pinta therefore belong to different periods of origin.
The older history includes the early medieval rock settlement of Belmonte, with its tower and fortifications; it is located in Veio Regional Park. The Chiesa di San Sebastiano preserves a 16th-century fresco whose background depicts Castelnuovo di Porto. The Chiesa della Madonna delle Virtù has an interior in the shape of a Greek cross and a Baroque, temple-like altar.
The themes thus range from military architecture and medieval settlement history to sacred spaces, murals and a wooden triptych.
Historic Tours and Trails in Veio Regional Park
Different forms of exploration are available for routes through Castelnuovo di Porto. The historic tour offers a short and accessible visit to the historic center. The panoramic trail also runs through the historic center and between sites of historical and artistic significance. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between a compact tour and a route focused more strongly on the course of the trail and the sights.
In Veio Regional Park, a well-signposted hiking trail network enables independent trekking tours. The park can be reached from Castelnuovo di Porto railway station via Trail 210C. In addition, Veio Regional Park can be entered from Laghetto di Grotta Pagana via Trails 210C and 210D. If you wish to travel without a fixed guided tour, the existing signage is relevant for orientation; the two access points open up different starting points for planning.
For planning the day, the walking tours in the historic center of Castelnuovo di Porto and trekking in Veio Regional Park are presented as separate focuses. The choice of route therefore depends on whether the focus is on the historic center or Veio Regional Park.
