Roccalvecce: Castle, City Walls and Landscape

Historic Centre

Castello Costaguti stands at the centre of Roccalvecce’s medieval historic centre. Roccalvecce also has its old city walls and the narrow streets of the village. Via delle Ripe is a path running along Roccalvecce’s old medieval city walls. The narrow streets of Roccalvecce can also be explored on foot. For planning a walking route, the distinction is clear: the Via follows the city walls, while exploring the lanes remains within the village.

Views and Historic Garden

Roccalvecce has several viewpoints overlooking the surrounding landscape of the Province of Viterbo. La Vignaccia is the historic garden belonging to Castello Costaguti, located at the foot of Roccalvecce. The two destinations differ in their relationship to the landscape: viewpoints direct the gaze across the province, while La Vignaccia at the foot of the village remains associated with the castle. For travel planning, a broad landscape perspective must therefore be distinguished from a specific garden in the village.

Sacred Connections

A small internal loggia of the old church or oratory connected the sacred space with Castello Costaguti. Since the 13th century, it served the lords as a place from which to attend religious services.

The Santuario della Vergine Santissima del Nespolo is located in the immediate surroundings of Roccalvecce. The adjoining road leads to below the Santuario della Vergine Santissima del Nespolo; another access route passes through a gate from the inside.
