Farnese: Rocca, Forest Paths and Local History

Farnese combines a multifaceted past with a rugged forest landscape and paths of different character. This makes the town appealing to travelers who want to explore historical traces, nature and regional specialties at their own pace during a holiday in Italy.

Historic Buildings and Cultural Insights

Between the 13th and 17th centuries, the Rocca Farnese was transformed from a medieval fortified building into an elegant aristocratic palace. This building illustrates the transition from defensive architecture to architecture designed for representation.

The Porta Nuova is another part of the town’s architectural history. It was built in 1613 by the architect Ettore Smeraldi. The Convento San Rocco comprises the church of “di Sant’Umano,” a 17th-century monastery and several buildings that are now used as guest accommodation. The church has choir stalls made of carved walnut wood, created by two Franciscan friars from France.

The Museo Civico “Ferrante Rittatore Vonwiller” in Farnese offers an additional perspective. It has a predominantly archaeological department and a natural history department. The cultural perspective therefore extends from architectural and ecclesiastical history to archaeology and natural history.

Paths with Different Profiles

The paths also have different characteristics. Stage 7 of the CAI 101 “Sentiero dei Briganti” has a difficulty rating of E and takes 3 hours and 20 minutes. For planning your day, the specific duration and the E rating are therefore central considerations.

On the CAI 163 “Ponte di Santa Maria di Sala – Quattro Strade,” a large part of the route follows paved or unpaved roads. These can also be used by wheelchairs and strollers. The particular section of the route is therefore an important consideration for families and travelers with mobility aids.

The 7a variant, “Variante crateri,” is a short circular trail that passes a series of craters of different sizes. Route 3, “Sentiero dei Lacioni,” runs almost entirely through the forest along old mule tracks with uneven, predominantly stony terrain.

Selva del Lamone: Forest and Settlement History

Selva del Lamone deepens the connection between nature and history. The rugged, difficult-to-access forest area formed on a lava flow from approximately 150,000 to 50,000 years ago. At the same time, Selva del Lamone preserves evidence of settlements from the Bronze Age as well as from the Etruscans and Lombards. Geology and settlement history emerge here as different layers of the same landscape.
