Trails through the Landscape of Piansano

The gentle hills of Piansano lie in the volcanic area of the Vulsinian Apparatus. The Sentiero Natura offers a particularly varied perspective on the surrounding area. It is part of a complex network of ochre-coloured paths that extend east and west beyond Piansano’s town centre. The focus is therefore not just on a single trail, but on a landscape in which different impressions come together.

The Sentiero Natura itself is a historic mule track and follows the so-called Ruscello delle Streghe. Along this route, a stream leads to a 1.5-hectare deciduous forest. Downy oaks, pubescent oaks, hornbeams, sweet chestnuts, service trees and poplars grow there. By paying attention to the composition of the vegetation while walking, you experience the landscape not only as open hills, but also as an alternation of woodland and cultivated land.

For a route extending beyond Piansano, there is the Sentiero della Salute, which connects Piansano with Capodimonte. Another established option for hiking enthusiasts is the Maternum Marathon 2026. This hiking event follows trails around the ancient Etruscan city of Maternum and includes three circular routes of 11, 19 and 39 kilometres. Etruscan Traces and Sacred Sites

Even within a small area, Piansano offers several specific points of interest for those interested in culture and history. The Etruscan rock tomb Tomba rupestre etrusca bears a long onomastic inscription in the Etruscan language. An Etruscan sarcophagus is also located in the entrance area of the Palazzo comunale di Piansano. The name of its owner, Vel Cnevnas Velus, is engraved on it.

The local sacred heritage includes the Chiesa di San Bernardino da Siena. Its single-nave interior is complemented by six chapels; the church also houses the body of the Venerable Lucia Burlini. The Loggetta at the Palazzo comunale di Piansano is also worth seeing: some scholars date its construction to the first half of the 18th century.

At the entrance to Piansano, the Fontana del Giglio preserves a peperino stone panel bearing the Farnese lily and the year of construction, 1585. At the same time, the fountain was extensively remodelled in modern times. During the Ascesa della Madonna, a wooden processional canopy decorated with lacquer and coloured inlays is used. The Ascesa della Madonna takes place on the Friday before the first Sunday in October.

Hilly Landscapes, the Lake and Local Products

In the steeper areas of Piansano, pastures, sown fields and oak forests alternate. This combination makes the landscape appealing for walks and hikes, as open and wooded sections alternate. Typical local products from Piansano include pecorino cheese. This speciality adds a culinary dimension to the landscape, closely connected with the local character of the town.

In the vicinity of Piansano, Lake Bolsena offers opportunities for windsurfing and relaxing boat trips. The Selva del Lamone nature reserve is also nearby and can be reached for excursions and walks. This makes it possible to accommodate different interests when planning: trails and woodland for active days, Etruscan and sacred heritage for cultural discoveries, and the lake and nature reserve for excursions in the surrounding area.
