Grotte di Castro: Tuff Cliff, Etruscan History and Historic Centre
Grotte di Castro combines a striking tuff landscape with a multifaceted past. For you, this creates a destination where the landscape, local history and Etruscan remains appeal to different interests. This character is particularly evident in the location, the buildings in the centre and the necropolises. You can combine different interests without reducing the town to a single theme: the tuff cliff and slopes shape the landscape, while the town centre and necropolises define its historical dimension.
Tuff Cliff, Lake Surroundings and Vegetation
Lo Sperone is the tuff cliff on which Grotte di Castro stands and forms a natural terrace above the basin of Lake Bolsena. The north-facing slopes of Grotte di Castro are characterised by dense, varied vegetation; chestnut trees, oaks, maples, elms and ash trees grow there, along with shrubs on the slopes of the tuff plateaus.
Basilica and Palazzo in the Historic Centre
The Basilica Santuario Maria SS. del Suffragio is located in the historic centre of Grotte di Castro. It was designed by Girolamo Rainaldi and completed by Andrea Selvi in 1672. It houses 19th-century frescoes by Luigi Fontana. The Palazzo del Vignola is located in the medieval historic centre of Grotte di Castro. It preserves a stone spiral staircase that connects the building’s three floors inside. The basilica and palazzo thus provide two architectural focal points: sacred furnishings and a distinctive architectural detail meet the history of the medieval centre here.
Etruscan Remains in the Tuff
The necropolis of Vigna la Piazza is the oldest funerary complex in Grotte di Castro. Its development can be traced between the end of the 8th century BC and the 5th century BC on the northern side of the Civita plateau. This dating makes clear how far back the town’s Etruscan past reaches.
The Etruscan necropolis of Pianezze is associated with the Etruscan settlement of Civita. It was used between the 7th and 5th centuries BC and comprises at least 24 chamber tombs dug into the hill’s tuff terraces. The Pianezze Archaeological Park has paths, barriers and information boards. In this way, the site combines archaeological remains with the characteristic form of the tuff terraces.
The necropolis of Centocamere extends across the entire hillside. It has at least three superimposed burial levels following the natural course of a tuff slope. This spatial layering adds another expression of the terrain to the picture of the Etruscan necropolises.
Museum and Village Detail
The Museo Civita presents Etruscan civilisation through videos, film footage, reconstructions of tombs and large-format photographs on the walls. Since 28 March 2025, it has been closed to the public due to renovation work on the palazzo.
The Fontana Grande on Via Roma is a sight in the village of Grotte di Castro. When choosing a hotel in Grotte di Castro, you can take your personal focus into account: would you like to shape your stay more through local history, Etruscan remains or the tuff landscape? This allows you to plan your desired travel rhythm between cultural history and landscape more consciously.
