Buildings, Art and Bronze Age History

Several specific buildings in the historic townscape represent different periods. The Palazzo Comunale was built around 1552 during the Farnese period. Porta Magenta was created in 1779 based on a design by Vignola. The complex of the Chiesa di Santa Croce contains a fresco from the Umbrian-Sienese school dating from the mid-15th century. One of the churches also contains a fresco of the Crucifixion attributed to Marcello Venusti.

The museum of the Rocca Farnese displays finds from the Bronze Age settlement at Lake Mezzano, which is now submerged. The settlement itself is dated approximately to the period from 1700 to 1150 BC. This makes it possible to explore the history of the lake not only through the landscape, but also through archaeological finds and their chronological classification.

Tradition and Regional Cuisine

The Tiratura del Solco Dritto is an old agricultural tradition. It takes place every year at dawn on August 14 in the Piana di Valentano, together with the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. Its fixed date and precise connection to the Piana di Valentano give this tradition a distinct place in the annual calendar. In addition, the Cece del Solco Dritto di Valentano represents a regional culinary specialty: it is used for a traditional chickpea soup with chestnuts and local herbs and has been included in Slow Food's Ark of Taste.
