Gorreto between High-Altitude Trails and the Trebbia

Gorreto combines highland landscapes, a river setting and a visibly fortified local history. From above, the historic fortified settlement structure of Gorreto, with a watchtower and several entrance gates, is still visible. The townscape thus stands alongside nature experiences on trails, by the water and at higher elevations. For planning your trip, this creates different focal points combining activity, landscape and history.

Circular Trail, Winter Routes and Fishing

The Anello di Fontanarossa e del Pian della Cavalla circular trail takes around 3 to 3.5 hours and involves approximately 425 metres of elevation gain. It can also be completed on horseback, as well as in winter on skis or snowshoes. You can therefore plan this route as a classic hike, on horseback or as a winter activity. The combination of a clear duration, elevation gain and several ways of getting around makes the circular trail a versatile part of a stay in Gorreto.

Gorreto has another focal point by the water. The “La riva di Ernest Hemingway sul Trebbia” tourist fishing zone is located in the municipalities of Gorreto and Rovegno. It extends from the turnoff to Rovegno at the cable crossing at kilometre 50 of the SS45 to the “lake” below the weir in the municipality of Gorreto, at the Enel cable crossing. In Gorreto’s fishing reserve, anglers can fly-fish on the Torrente Gorreto. The Trebbia and the Torrente Gorreto are therefore among the specific bodies of water that play a role for anglers in this area.

Pian della Cavalla and the Spring Bloom

Pian della Cavalla is a panoramic high plateau in the municipality of Gorreto. It lies in the Antola Regional Nature Park and is known for the spectacular bloom of daffodils and other spring flowers. In addition to its trails, this landscape therefore offers a distinct natural highlight that is particularly visible in spring. The name of the plateau is also associated with the Anello di Fontanarossa e del Pian della Cavalla circular trail.

Fortified Town Centre and Palazzo Centurione

Architecture also shapes Gorreto. The construction of Palazzo Centurione and the adjoining buildings along its façade created a planned fortified town centre that is considered unique throughout the Val Trebbia. Palazzo Centurione Scotto is now an abandoned 17th-century building with a black-and-white striped façade typical of Liguria. It was once the centre of the administrative and economic life of the town centre. Palazzo Centurione is privately owned, so its historic presence should primarily be considered as part of the townscape.

Church and Trails to Monte Alfeo

The Chiesa di Santo Stefano is located in the cemetery area of Fontanarossa within Gorreto and is open during the day. A route to Monte Alfeo begins in Gorreto’s square and follows trail 111 from Gorreto to Bertone; it then continues from Bertone to Monte Alfeo.

Arrival via the SS45

For travel to the area, the SS45 Genova-Piacenza connects Genova-Prato near the Genova Est toll station with Torriglia, Rovegno and Gorreto.
