San Salvatore: History, Museum and Trails on Monte San Giacomo

San Salvatore is a destination where architecture, history and landscape appeal to different interests. The Basilica dei Fieschi is located within the monumental complex of Borgo San Salvatore dei Fieschi. It is one of Liguria’s most outstanding and best-preserved Romanesque-Gothic buildings. The complex stands on the crest of a hill at the edge of the plain crossed by the Entella River and at the foot of Monte San Giacomo.

Historic buildings and a permanent museum

The history of the village also includes San Salvatore il Vecchio, a Baroque church that has now been deconsecrated. It is used as an oratory and for exhibitions and conferences. At the same time, San Salvatore il Vecchio is older than the Basilica dei Fieschi and served as a parish church until 1798. Those who wish to trace the development of the village through different eras will find here a particularly vivid connection between medieval, Baroque and later uses.

Another historic stop is Palazzo Comitale. Its construction is traditionally dated to around 1252. The Centro Culturale Museo dei Fieschi, a permanent museum, is housed in the so-called stables of Palazzo Comitale.

Traditions and events in Cogorno

San Salvatore is also associated with local festivals and historical reenactments. Addio do Fantin is a historical reenactment held every year on 13 August in the forecourt of the Basilica dei Fieschi. In the Cogorno edition, the event includes the reconstruction of a medieval village with stalls run by merchants and craftspeople, games, performances by falconers and jesters, as well as music and dancing.

In San Salvatore di Cogorno, the Fiera dei Perdoni e dei Perdonetti is also a tradition celebrating the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. These two themes show San Salvatore as a place where history remains present not only in buildings, but also in festivals and public performances.

Trails on Monte San Giacomo and along the Entella

For a trip involving outdoor activities, the Anello dei Fieschi offers a clearly described route. The circular trail leads from the Basilica dei Fieschi to Monte San Giacomo and is 6 km long. Monte San Giacomo also bears a historical trace of the region’s working life: slate was once extracted there in quarries.

Cycling travelers can also discover a distinct connection with the landscape. The Ciclovia dell’Ardesia runs through the Entella Fauna Oasis. Together with the circular trail, it offers a different perspective on San Salvatore from a purely cultural and historical view. The different themes are therefore suitable for individual trip planning, allowing you to focus on architecture, museums, events, hiking or cycling.
