Pieve Ligure between the Sea and the Apennines

Pieve Ligure is located on the Riviera di Levante in the Golfo Paradiso, on the slopes of the Ligurian Apennines. The town extends from sea level to the summit of Monte Santa Croce at an altitude of 518 metres. This range directly shapes the landscape: the coast is characterised by cliffs, while the hills feature cultivated terraces and olive groves. Pieve Ligure thus presents, within a compact area, the transition between the coastline and the mountain landscape. The altitude of 518 metres marks a clear contrast with the starting point at sea level.

Panoramas and Trails through the Hills

A grassy square beside the church offers a panorama over the Gulf of Genoa: the view stretches from Isola del Tino in the east to Capo Mele in the west. The short circular trail between Pieve Alta and San Bernardo also combines several characteristic views of the area. It is considered suitable for everyone and particularly scenic. The trail begins in the upper part of Pieve Ligure, first passing through olive groves and then following a steep old mule track past several farmhouses. The short loop is not level throughout: anyone planning to walk it should allow for the steep old mule track as a separate section.

Churches and Maritime Testimonies

The Oratorio di Sant'Antonio Abate is a typical Ligurian building reflecting the architecture of religious brotherhoods. It has a single-nave layout, a gabled roof and a barrel vault, and was inaugurated in 1404. The oratory houses maritime votive models of three boats: the bombards “Concezione” and “S. Teresa”, as well as the brig “N.S. delle Grazie”.

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo was built before the year 1000. It stands above sea level; this location was intended to provide protection against pirate attacks. Admission to the church is free. The dates therefore range from the period before 1000 to the inauguration in 1404.

Sagra della Mimosa since 1957

A distinctive feature of local life is the Sagra della Mimosa, which has been held in Pieve Ligure since 1957. It includes a parade with flower-decorated floats. There are also stalls selling mimosa plants, focaccette and street food. Visitors to the Sagra can therefore choose between different programme items, including the parade and the stalls with mimosa plants, focaccette and street food.

Getting to Pieve Ligure

Pieve Ligure can be reached by train and public transport. By car, the journey is via the A12 motorway, using the Nervi or Recco exits, or via the Aurelia state road.
