Velva: Medieval Village Setting and Culture in the Upper Val Petronio

Velva lies in the upper Val Petronio at 410 m above sea level. Its medieval village setting has been preserved; the village center is almost entirely reserved for pedestrians and inaccessible to motor vehicles. Together with the extensive woodland areas, particularly the chestnut forests, this combination of a historic village center and wooded surroundings shapes the character of the village.

Historic Velva and Sacred Sites

The first documented mention of Velva dates from 1451 and refers to the Chiesa di San Martino, with an ornate Risseu pavement. At the Santuario di Nostra Signora della Guardia in Velva, a statue created by the sculptor Antonio Canepa is venerated. The sacred building and the procession on August 29 are therefore among the defining cultural points of reference for the village.

San Nicolao Between History and Hiking Trail

Above Velva lie the remains of the Ospitale di San Nicolao, a hospice dating from Roman times that remained active throughout the Middle Ages. Nearby, the Ospitale stood along a medieval Romea road linking Liguria, Emilia, and Lunigiana. The historic site is therefore directly connected with an ancient interregional transport route.

For hiking enthusiasts, the CAI circular trail Anello Velva–Pietra di Vasca provides a specific thematic connection. It follows an old connecting path between Velva and Moneglia and leads to the archaeological area of San Nicolao. On this route, history and the course of the trail can therefore be considered interconnected themes, without the circular trail itself being understood as a current transport service.

Landscape, Agriculture, and Local Festivals

In the lower-lying areas around Velva, olives are grown, bearing witness to the local agricultural tradition. This complement to the chestnut forests shows two distinct landscape and agricultural features within the area. At the Festa della trebbiatura del grano on the last Sunday in July, the traditional practice known as “batte u gran” is reenacted using historic machinery. “Invito a Velva” takes place on the second Sunday in August and includes tastings of typical products.

The location at Colle di Velva is also relevant to the regional landscape: The pass is an Apennine pass at an elevation of 545 m and connects the Val Petronio with the upper Val di Vara. The Strada statale 523 del Colle di Cento Croci, an important transport link between the coast and the hinterland, runs across it.
