Statale: History, Cave and Trails in Val Graveglia

Statale is considered one of the oldest hamlets in Val Graveglia. As a hamlet of Ne, it is a destination for you if historical sites, a cave, trails and regional products are among your travel interests.

Historical traces in Statale

Through Statale’s characteristic narrow streets, you reach an ancient cemetery; next to it are the ruins of an adjoining church. Roman remains were discovered during archaeological excavations in the hamlet of Statale. A rural settlement dating from Roman times was also located in the immediate vicinity and is still being investigated.

Statale can be traced back to the 11th century and is included in a guided tour of the historic villages of Val Graveglia. Nascio and Statale were initially connected by a shared parish church; subsequently, the two hamlets each built their own parish church. The municipal area of Ne is characterized by numerous industrial archaeology sites associated with manganese mining.

Karst, mountains and trails

The Tana da Ciocca cave in the hamlet of Statale in Ne is suitable for caving and is managed by Parco Aveto. It is located in the GE 36 Alta Val Graveglia karst area and is suitable as a first vertical caving tour for beginners.

The Church of San Bartolomeo lies at an elevation of 592 metres on the western slope of the Porcile and Capra mountains. This elevation creates a different landscape character from the karst area of Tana da Ciocca. A largely unpaved road leads from Cassagna through extensive chestnut forests to Statale. A hiking trail serves as an excursion route through the hamlets of Nascio, Cassagna and Statale. A municipal road also connects Statale with Passo del Biscia and Arzeno.

Regional impressions and practical planning

Stataland is a grass playground with wooden play equipment. The Santa Rita waterworks in the hamlet of Statale is now out of service.

The Val Graveglia farmers’ market in Conscenti takes place every Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., from May to the end of October. Sausages come from the areas of Terre di Prato di Reppia, Statale and Conscenti. The Rossi Silvana farm shop in Loc. Statale (GE) is associated with Parco dell’Aveto.
