Tiglieto: Abbey, Forest Culture and Nature in the Ligurian Apennines

Tiglieto combines a significant monastery complex with forest trails, the Orba and a protected landscape. If you would like to combine culture and nature in a manageable way, you will find concrete starting points here for planning your trip.

The Badia di Tiglieto and its buildings

The Badia di Tiglieto was founded in 1120 and was the first Cistercian abbey built outside French territory. Its Romanesque complex consists of a church, monastery and refectory on three sides of a cloister. The fourth side is bordered by areas used for agriculture.

During guided tours of the Badia di Tiglieto organized by the Beigua Park administration, you can visit the cloister, the armarium, the chapter house and the church. The historical architecture also includes the Ponte romanico, which is built entirely of serpentinite and has five arches. The central arch is approximately 20 meters high.

The religious buildings in the town also offer different perspectives. The Chiesa Parrocchiale N.S. Assunta is characterized by frescoes by Dalle Ceste and has a facade made of locally sourced stone left exposed. Every year, on the occasion of the memorial day on August 29, a novena is held at the Chiesetta della Vrigna, ending in the evening at 8 p.m. with a torchlight procession.

Tiglieto is considered a place associated with traditional woodcutters, who are regarded as guardians of forest culture. This connection complements the historic buildings with a direct link to the forest landscape that shapes the town and its surroundings.

Hiking around the Badia

The Anello Badia Di Tiglieto circular trail begins at the Badia di Tiglieto. It is 6.5 kilometers long, takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, and has a difficulty rating of E – hiking. This makes it possible to plan the trail as a separate activity without excluding a cultural visit to the abbey from your itinerary.

The Anello Badia Di Tiglieto runs through forests and along the banks of the Orba stream. The starting point is reached after the town center via Casavecchia and after crossing the bridge over the Orba. ATP bus services can be used to travel to Tiglieto for the circular trail.

The Badia di Tiglieto can be reached by two roads: one leads from Genoa via Masone and Campo Ligure, while the other leads from Savona via Sassello and Urbe. These two access routes provide practical guidance if you would like to combine Tiglieto with different itineraries through Liguria.

Protected landscape around the Orba

The Pian della Badia (Tiglieto) SAC covers approximately 250 hectares in the municipality of Tiglieto. It includes a valley with a meandering stream, a floodplain with valuable pools, some of which are anthropogenic in origin, as well as slopes with open coniferous forest. The landscape therefore offers several clearly distinguishable natural settings within a compact thematic area.

Cerastium utriense occurs in the Pian della Badia (Tiglieto) SAC. It is a species of the carnation family endemic exclusively to the western Ligurian Apennines. Those interested in regional plants and special habitats will encounter here a concrete example of the biological distinctiveness of this landscape.

Near Acquabuona, a hamlet of Tiglieto (SV), the Orba flows through a series of spectacular gorges. Together with the streambank along the circular trail and the meandering watercourse in the protected area, this creates a natural theme that clearly differs from the buildings of the Badia.

For your trip planning, you can therefore prioritize Tiglieto according to your own interests: the Badia and the churches focus on history and architecture, the Anello on hiking and forest, while the Pian della Badia SAC and the gorges of the Orba place nature-related experiences at the center. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation, this distinction helps you plan your stay according to your personal focus.
