Isola del Cantone combines historic buildings along the Scrivia and Vobbia with ecclesiastical art, archaeological finds and forest trails. This creates various focal points for planning your trip: you can explore medieval and early modern buildings, trace the development of a parish church or examine the history of the upper Scrivia area through archaeological finds. In addition, two forest trails lead from the Ponte di Zan in a landscape-oriented direction.

Palaces at the confluence of the Scrivia and Vobbia

The Palazzo Marchionale Spinola stands in the municipality of Isola del Cantone at the confluence of the Scrivia and Vobbia. The Castello Spinola Mignacco, which is also known as Castello del Piano, is likewise located at the confluence of the Vobbia and Scrivia streams. It was probably built by the Spinola family in the Middle Ages. If you would like to visit this building, please note the stated arrangement: the Castello Spinola Mignacco can be visited by request as part of a guided tour.

The Parrocchia di San Michele Arcangelo

The Parrocchia di San Michele Arcangelo brings together several periods of sacred architectural and art history. The first parish building was founded between the 12th and 13th centuries by Benedictine monks. The present structure dates from the 17th century, while the choir was built in 1618. A further artistic transformation took place in 1901: the Milanese painter Rodolfo Gambini decorated the Parrocchia di San Michele Arcangelo with new decorations. This chronology makes the site particularly interesting if you want to consider historical development not only through a single construction date, but through several successive phases.

Palazzo Spinola in Pietrabissara

In Pietrabissara stands the Palazzo/Castello Spinola, a palace built in the 17th century in the style of the aristocratic palaces of that period. Today, the building houses the Centro Studi Storici e Storico Ecclesiastici and the Accademia Olubrense. The palace’s historic architecture is thus connected with institutions whose names indicate a focus on historical and ecclesiastical historical studies. For travelers interested in culture, this site adds another Spinola palace from the early modern period to Isola del Cantone’s architectural history.

Archaeology, a sanctuary and forest trails

The Museo Archeologico dell’Alta Valle Scrivia preserves archaeological finds dating from the Neolithic period to the year 1500. The time frame therefore extends from the New Stone Age to the end of the Middle Ages, offering a long view of the area’s past. Another notable site is the Santuario di Nostra Signora di Tuscia. It lies on the connecting road between the hamlet of Monterosso and Vobbietta, near the riverbed of the Torrente Vobbia.

If you would also like to include trails and landscapes in your trip to Italy, two forest trails begin at the Ponte di Zan: the “Sentiero dei sette seccherecci” and the “Sentiero dell’acqua pendente”. The different themes establish clear personal priorities. When choosing accommodation, it may therefore be decisive whether you want to explore historic architecture and ecclesiastical art in greater depth or include archaeological finds and forest trails as themes of your trip.
