Lavagna between Slate Culture and the Coast

Lavagna combines a distinctive Ligurian past with coastal scenery and regional everyday life. In the historic centre, medieval arcades and colourful houses shape the townscape. There is also a long sandy beach and an important marina, giving the town a maritime character. This creates a destination where historic architecture, the sea and the history of slate meet within a compact thematic area.

Art, Faith and Historic Houses

The Torre del Borgo houses two different collections: a collection of slate works by the sculptor Francesco Dallorso, who was born in Lavagna, and the Rodolfo Alloisio archaeological collection. The Torre del Borgo thus brings together slate art and archaeology under one roof.

The sacred sites also preserve remarkable evidence of the past. The Basilica di Santo Stefano contains a painting by Domenico Piola depicting the risen Christ, Saint Nicholas and Saint Stephen. The Oratorio della Santissima Trinità preserves wooden processional crosses, including works by Maragliano and his school, which are used during large summer processions. The Cimitero Monumentale of Lavagna is considered an open-air museum, with ornamental tombs, remarkable statues and architecturally outstanding chapels.

The house museum preserves the domestic atmosphere of a Ligurian family between the 19th and 20th centuries. For seasonal visits, Casa Carbone was available at set times; on other days, visits were possible only by prior arrangement.

Cycle Routes and Slate Carriers’ Paths

The Ciclovia dell’ardesia is a 33-kilometre cycle route. It begins on Lavagna’s seafront promenade and follows the Entella River. The section to Rivarola passes through the Entella nature oasis and is flat, illuminated and fully paved. Lavagna also offers trekking routes along the paths once used by slate carriers. Those planning the Ciclovia in stages can treat the section to Rivarola as a stage in its own right; the total length of 33 kilometres provides the framework for the outing.

Torta dei Fieschi and Local Specialities

A special date in the annual calendar is the Torta dei Fieschi. Since 1949, the event on 14 August has included a historical procession in medieval costumes through Lavagna, ending at the Torre Fieschi. The event’s characteristic dessert was developed by Lavagna’s historic pastry shops. Every year, more than ten quintals of Torta dei Fieschi are distributed during the event.

Olive oil bearing the name “lavagnine” is also part of the local culinary identity. Those considering Lavagna as a destination will therefore find, alongside beaches, architecture and paths, tangible links to craft and gastronomic traditions.
