Pigna between art, mountain trails and Ligurian food culture

Pigna combines a historic town centre steeped in history with trails through protected mountain landscapes and a distinctive regional food culture. This makes it a destination that is not limited to a single attraction.

Art and history in the town centre

The Polo Museale di Pigna is located in the historic centre at the foot of the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo. The museum comprises seven rooms and brings together the Museo del cibo, the Museo della lavanda and the Museo etnografico della memoria contadina. There, you can encounter both regional products and the rural culture of remembrance and everyday life of past generations.

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo was built in the 13th century and extended in the 16th century; its Gothic style was preserved in the process. It is associated with the Polittico del Canavesio, which is more than 4.5 metres high and is considered the largest polyptych in western Liguria. Giovanni Canavesio painted and signed the work. On 4 January 1500, the wealthy municipality of Pigna commissioned it for its parish church dedicated to Saint Michael.

The Chiesa di San Bernardo also leads back to an earlier period. Its construction began between the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The church is located along an old route that linked Sanremo, Baiardo, Pigna, Saorgio and Tenda. From the outside, it offers a typical view of terraced cultivated areas and dry-stone walls – a tangible image of the traditional shaping of the landscape.

Trails through protected areas and habitats

For hiking, the Pigna–Prearba–Buggio route is particularly relevant: it passes through the Special Area of Conservation of the Toraggio and Pietravecchia mountains, which is managed by the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Alpi Liguri. After just a few dozen metres, the Anello della Valle delle Tane circular route also enters the Special Area of Conservation and the Special Protection Area of the Toraggio and Pietravecchia mountains, as well as the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Alpi Liguri.

Along the Anello della Valle delle Tane are habitats where, among others, golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos), short-toed snake eagles (Circaetus gallicus), peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus), eagle owls (Bubo bubo), common wall lizards (Podarcis muralis), wolves (Canis lupus), bullheads (Cottus gobio) and various bats occur. Those who view nature not merely as a backdrop but as an independent reason to travel will find a diverse thematic focus here.

Local products and inherited traditions

The white beans of Pigna have been cultivated for more than 300 years and are protected as a Slow Food Presidium. They are particularly well known and appreciated in the Imperia area; at the same time, they belong to the varieties with small white seeds. The local name “Rundìn dell'Angelo” covers beans from Conio, Badalucco and Pigna. The Museo del cibo gives this regional subject an appropriate cultural context in the town centre.

Another special feature is the sulphurous thermal spring Sorgente idrotermale di Pigna. It has been known since the 13th century; from 1844 onwards, it was used commercially and the first thermal facilities were built. In the Buggio district of Pigna, a chestnut festival is traditionally held every year. The range therefore extends from historic thermal use to a recurring local festival tradition.
