Praelo: San Bartolomeo, Watchtower and Historic Olive Mill

Praelo lies on the hill overlooking the Val Prino and is a small village where only a few families live today. San Bartolomeo and the architectural traces

The parish church of San Bartolomeo is the most important religious building in Praelo. Its present appearance also represents a clearly dated period in the village’s history: the parish church was rebuilt in 1839. Those interested in churches and historic village architecture will find a single, clearly identifiable focal point here, without Praelo losing its small-scale character.

Praelo developed around a watchtower. The former watchtower contains a farmers’ room and a well for the water supply. Both elements point to the building’s former function and to the everyday life associated with a fortified village.

Another detail can be found in a warehouse next to the house of the Gandolfi family. The remains of a square tower have been preserved there. Its entrance is framed by a pointed arch made of two worked stone blocks; beside it are iron holes for door hinges. Details such as these make the architectural traces easier to understand: alongside the tower’s form, the working of the stone and the function of the entrance also remain recognisable.

The historic olive mill

Praelo is home to a 15th-century olive mill powered by animals. It complements the religious and defensive evidence with an example from rural working life. The heavy wheels, with wooden gears above them, are in perfect condition. This creates a vivid connection with the technical processes involved in a traditional olive mill, without implying that it is currently operating or open to visitors.

Hike towards Praelo

The village can also be incorporated into a hike. The hike from Molini di Prelà to Prelà Castello passes at an elevation of 285 m in the direction of Praelo. A hike including studio visits takes approximately 7 to 7¾ hours. The hike from Molini di Prelà to Prelà Castello takes up a large part of the day.
