Carro is located in the Alta Val di Vara in the Ligurian Apennines and is included in the Montemarcello–Magra Regional Natural Park. More than 90% of the municipal area is covered by a continuous expanse of forest. This dense woodland shapes the character of the town just as much as its historical and cultural points of reference.
Forest landscape and trails with a history
In the Monte Castelfermo–Cota area there are two Iron Age settlement sites of the prehistoric Ligurians. One is located on the summit of Monte Castelfermo at an altitude of 791 m, the other in the valley below at Cota. The landscape is complemented by historic trails and winding mule tracks from Carro, suitable for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking.
Churches, art and Paganini
The parish church of San Lorenzo Martire was built in the 15th century. Inside are a painting of the Madonna del Carmine attributed to Domenico Piola and a painting of Saint Lawrence by Giuseppe Dorffmeister. In the hamlet of Cerreta, the Santuario di Sant'Antonio Maria Gianelli is dedicated to Sant'Antonio Maria Gianelli.
In the heart of Carro is the Casa Paganini Experience. The Essiccatoio di castagne dei Sepponi, also known as Casone Secchereccio, was built in 1821. The Paganini Festival of Carro was established in 2001 to honour the work of Niccolò Paganini. It begins and ends in Carro at a house connected with the Paganini family and takes place from mid-July to 14 August.
The Museo Mineralogico in Carro is currently closed to visitors due to renovation work. The Museo Mineralogico Permanente houses a collection of minerals found in the municipality of Carro, as well as collections of gemstones, semi-precious stones and fluorescent minerals. In addition, the municipality of Carro offers a free audio guide via izi.TRAVEL.
Routes and historic traces
The Carro–Pavareto–Mola–Pietra Spaccata–Monte San Nicolao route connects with the Alta Via delle Cinque Terre. Near Monte San Nicolao are the remains of the 12th-century Hospitale di San Nicolao. The parish church of San Giorgio in Castello contains significant frescoes.
For orientation within the trail network, three connections of different lengths are recorded: Route 625 Carro–Trambacco–Cerreta–Stanga–Craviola–Monte Rocche–Vagie begins in Carro and is 12.6 km long. Route 627 also begins in Carro, continues via Castello towards Craviola and measures 8.2 km. Route 627c connects Agnola and Castello over a distance of 0.9 km. If you want to classify routes by length, these three figures provide a clear basis for comparison.
Natural features around Agnola and the Rio di Colla
The presence of the yellow-bellied toad has been documented at the Rio di Agnola. The Rio di Agnola is part of the Natura 2000 network. The Rio di Colla is an aquatic and riparian habitat. Agnola is also home to an unusual apotropaic head.
