Church and Castle Above the Harbours

The medieval Church of San Lorenzo stands above Varigotti’s ancient harbour. The present building dates from the 15th century. The site of Varigotti Castle can be reached on foot from the Via Aurelia. The Byzantine Castrum and the medieval Castle of Varigotti served to protect the natural harbour of Baia dei Saraceni.

Hiking Trails of Varying Difficulty

The Sentiero del Pellegrino leads from Varigotti to Noli and is a moderately difficult hike of about two hours. For the route to Noli, you can use the approximate walking time of two hours as the trail’s timeframe. By contrast, an easy, scenic circular trail leads from Varigotti to the Balcone sul Mare. The Grotta dei Falsari is a natural cave located along the Sentiero del Pellegrino. Maquis, Headlands and Distinctive Coastal Settings

Typical Mediterranean maquis, including rare and endemic species, grows on the Varigotti headland. Around 70 botanical species typical of Mediterranean maquis can be found on the Punta Crena headland. Punta Crena beach can only be reached from the sea. The botanical diversity and the special access conditions make Punta Crena relevant to both nature and coastal interests, without requiring both experiences to use the same access route.

Varigotti Promontory Park

The footpath to Varigotti Promontory Park begins in the historic coastal centre of the town. The visitor centre in the park has a small exhibition room. The reptile house can be visited by reservation and accompanied by the Varigotti Promontory Guides. The reptile house must be reserved before the accompanied visit. The Promontory Guide Group organises environmental education activities in Varigotti Promontory Park.
