Bracca Between Stone and Forest

Bracca is characterized by stone houses, small contrade and a wooded landscape. Church History Spanning Several Periods

The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea in Bracca has been documented since 1360. The present church was built in 1857 on the same site as its predecessor. In 1872, Bishop Pier Luigi Speranza consecrated the church and confirmed its historic dedication to Saint Andrew the Apostle.

The design of the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea is also clearly documented: its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. Stucco pilasters characterize the interior, while the transept contains two altars dedicated to the Visitation and the Madonna. The church therefore offers concrete architectural and religious points of reference for anyone who prefers to understand places through their architectural history rather than through landscape images alone.

In Cornalta, Bracca, the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo is associated with a visitation report by Carlo Borromeo from 1575, which records three altars. The church also houses a 17th-century oil painting from the school of Ceresa depicting Mary with the saints.

Orrido di Bracca: Rock, Water and Winter Formations

The Orrido di Bracca comprises a 2.5-kilometre-long rocky gorge formed over the course of centuries by the Torrente Ambria. The gorge therefore represents a landscape whose present form was created by water and a long natural development.

Another historical layer is added by the road that runs through the Orrido di Bracca. It dates from 1882, and construction work lasted a decade. In cold winter conditions, frost stalactites can form in the gorge. This point is particularly concrete for seasonal planning: in addition to the geological formation and the historic road, a phenomenon linked to cold winter conditions is also part of the Orrido’s described character.

Springs, Mineral Water and Fixed Dates

The springs of Sorgente Bracca rise in an untouched natural landscape. There, limestone ensures the purity of the water. At the same time, the history of the water extends into the development of a facility and a brand: in 1906, Sorgente Bracca was handed over to a thermal company, which took over its collection and bottling. This led to the creation of the first Fonte Bracca facility.

The official mineral water brand “Bracca” was introduced in 1907. The significance of the springs can therefore be understood both through the landscape and through their historical use, without conflating the two aspects.

Two dates are also scheduled for Bracca in 2026: the Festa del Tartufo Nero di Bracca is planned for 27 September 2026. The Festa delle Castagne is scheduled for 10 and 11 October 2026. Anyone wishing to align their travel period with a fixed event can use these dates as points of reference.

Routes in Val Serina

Sentiero 597 connects Frerola in Algua with Bracca in Val Serina. This provides a concrete route connection between the places for hiking planning. After crossing the bridge over the Brembo when entering Val Serina, the route from Zogno to Oltre il Colle leads directly to the impressive Orrido di Bracca gorge.

Along this route, the paved road climbs with a gentle incline to Bracca’s renowned thermal spring. The connection with the valley floor can be traced back to 1505 via the Ambria bridge; it was built by the municipalities of Bracca and Spino. When choosing a hotel in Bracca, these different focal points can provide practical guidance: churches and art support a culture-focused itinerary, while the gorge, springs and the routes described place other interests at the centre.
