Paladina between the Brembo, hills, and history

Paladina lies at the foot of the Valle Brembana on a terrace between the left bank of the Brembo River and the ridge rising from Monte di Sombreno toward Bergamo Alta. A compact town center with a long history

The historic center of Paladina is compact and crossed by narrow medieval streets. A small 16th-century chapel stands on Piazzetta S. Rocco. The town’s history goes back much further: the first document mentioning Paladina dates from 856 and refers to the construction of the parish church, Chiesa Parrocchiale di Sant'Alessandro. This church is considered one of the oldest churches in the Bergamo area.

Sacred sites and historic complexes

An important point of reference in the town’s history is the Santuario di Sombreno. It stands on a scenic green hill where a medieval castle, now disappeared, once stood. The sanctuary was created by combining two churches: one dedicated to the Natività di Maria and one to the Madonna Addolorata. The Chiesa dell’Addolorata in the Santuario di Sombreno dates from 1493.

Sombreno di Paladina is also home to Villa Pesenti Agliardi, a historic residence from the 17th century. The original design of its garden also tells of an elaborately conceived historical setting: a monumental garden with symbolic elements and buildings inspired by antiquity was planned. These included the Tempietto del Silenzio, the Fontana della Najade, the obelisk, and the Casa dell’Ortolano, inspired by Pompeii. The wording of the original design is crucial here; it describes a plan and not a blanket statement about the current condition of the individual elements.

Daily life and practical orientation

Another historical feature can be found in Ghiaie, where the remains of the watermills that belonged to the former mill district have been preserved. For everyday needs and longer stays, the Biblioteca Comunale di Paladina provides practical information: it has an entrance and parking space accessible to people with disabilities. Seating is also available for longer study sessions.

Paths, views, and connections to Bergamo

A rising staircase path leads from Villa Pesenti Agliardi to the Santuario di Sombreno. Along the path are votive chapels leading to a panoramic platform belonging to the sacred complex. The network of paths in the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo is also relevant for walking and landscape experiences. It is 8 kilometers long overall and passes through wooded areas, extensive meadows, and agriculturally cultivated fields. Near Villa Pesenti Agliardi, bus line 10 runs in Paladina toward Bergamo.
