Piazza Brembana: Local History, Art and Routes along the Brembo

Piazza Brembana invites you to include local history, sacred art and outdoor activities in your travel plans. The historic centre, churches with works of art, the Ecomuseo Fratelli Calvi and routes along the Brembo offer different ways to explore the area. You can combine historic townscapes with a stroll, a hike, a bike ride or a riverside route.

Historic Routes through the Town

A walk through the historic centre follows Via F.lli Calvi and Via San Bernardo, passing the former premises of the Pretura and the Canossian convent, as well as the still-standing Chiesetta di San Bernardo with its oratory. The historic Strada Priula also passed through Piazza Brembana by the parish church. Its surviving collection of old buildings includes the Contrade Orenghi and Pissamora.

Churches and Works of Art

The parish church of San Martino was rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century in the Neo-Gothic style, based on a design by the architect Preda from Ponte S. Pietro. It houses a polyptych of Saint Martin from 1503 by Lattanzio da Rimini. The church of San Bernardo houses works by Carlo Ceresa, Palma il Giovane and Andrea Vicentino. These include a painting by Carlo Ceresa dating from around 1660 and the high altarpiece by Palma il Giovane. Its single-nave interior is divided into three bays.

The Ecomuseo Fratelli Calvi

The Ecomuseo Fratelli Calvi is an open-air museum trail in Piazza Brembana. Iron steles display photographs, documents, letters and captions about the Calvi brothers and their family. At Casa Calvi, the ecomuseum also includes a municipal hall with documents, images, condolence letters and historical material about the Calvi brothers and their mother.

Hiking and Cycling

Sentiero 128 begins in Piazza Brembana and, after crossing a characteristic bridge with a tower at the end, leads to the Cappelletta dei Fondi. For planning a bike ride, the Zogno–Piazza Brembana cycle path provides specific details: it is 21 kilometres long, has a total elevation gain of 240 metres and gradients of no more than five per cent. Another itinerary begins in Piazza Brembana and Lenna and follows the quiet course of the Brembo River through woods and clearings to Fondra.

Along the Brembo River

Zona Fondi is an equipped green area on the Brembo River, intended for leisure and relaxation. In Zona Fondi, you can see the ruins of an old mill and the Cappelletta dei Morti dei Fondi. Its frescoes recall the burial of the dead during recurring plague epidemics.

Historic Transport Traces

The history of transport includes Piazza Brembana railway station: the first passenger trains reached it on 31 July 1926; passenger services were discontinued on 17 March 1966.
