Palosco: Rivers, History and Historical Traces

Palosco combines a settlement history shaped by water with preserved traces of its fortifications and individual historic buildings. The settlement developed on a hill at the confluence of the Cherio and Oglio rivers. The original settlement site was naturally protected by the two rivers and the surrounding marshes. Historic Centre and Medieval Traces

The historic centre of Palosco preserves traces of the medieval moat and three gates. The fortification gates have also been documented since 1179. Initially, there were the Porta Superiore to the north and the Porta Inferiore. Those interested in local history, historic settlement structures and architecture will find clear points of connection here between the layout of the centre and the former defence of the settlement.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The parish church of Palosco has been documented since the 12th century. Another distinctive feature is S. Maria della Mercede in the Torre delle Passere complex. The chapel was built at the end of the 18th century by the Terzi aristocratic family for the farmers of the Torre and to house the family crypt. Both buildings represent different phases of the town’s history and give Palosco’s cultural profile a religious and social dimension.

The castle of Palosco can also be traced back to the year 957, when a tower was documented. The foundation of its keep was discovered in 1927. The ruins of the Torre di Enrico IV are also located in Piazza Castello. They are approximately six metres high and consist of river pebbles and dressed stones. The historical evidence therefore ranges from early fortifications to visible structural remains in the present-day townscape.

Oglio Landscape and Paths

The Cappella di Santa Maria della Visitazione is located on the upper terrace of the Oglio River. On 2 November 2025, a 15-kilometre-long, level nature walk passed through Palosco and its historic centre, between the Oglio and Cherio rivers.

Parco Rilloglio offers children’s play equipment and a picnic area. This means that, alongside its historical attractions, Palosco also has a specific place for a break with the family. In August, the Sagra Patronale di San Lorenzo is celebrated in honour of the patron saint San Lorenzo.
