San Giacomo and the History of the Town
The church of San Giacomo in Piazzatorre was built in the 16th century and consecrated on July 29, 1514. Inside, it houses a nine-panel polyptych by Agostino Caversegno dating from 1537. The cultural calendar includes the Feast of Saint James, the patron saint of Piazzatorre, held on July 25. Historically, during this celebration, the parish priest would climb up to the alpine pastures and mountain farms with the faithful to bless bread, salt and livestock.
Winter Sports and Mountain Destinations
The Torcola Vaga ski resort offers runs with varying levels of difficulty. At an altitude of 1,550 metres, the Rifugio Gremei is also located here and is considered a destination for skiers and hikers. These two places make it clear that Piazzatorre is interesting both for days on the slopes and for activities at higher elevations.
Climbing and Mountain Biking
The Bruno Tassi very Camos climbing wall features several equipped routes of varying difficulty for beginners and experienced climbers. It is located in a quiet, shaded woodland setting and can be reached from the car park opposite the tourist office on Via IV Novembre via a short, well-signposted path.
For experienced cyclists, LoveBikePark Piazzatorre includes the technical “Back to the roots” downhill trail. The “Gullòn” flow trail, on the other hand, is suitable for beginners and experienced riders. The two routes therefore explicitly differ in their stated level of difficulty and cater to different levels of mountain biking experience.
Ice Rink for Active Days
Le Pinete ice rink is a covered rink measuring 60 × 30 metres. Over the years, it has hosted world-class athletes, young competitors and established professionals for training sessions and camps. For families and travellers who would also like to include sporting activities away from mountain trails, it is one of the interesting destinations in Piazzatorre.
Hiking with Mountain Views
A route through the Torcole leads to the scenic summit of Monte Torcola at an altitude of 1,786 metres.
