Mozzo: Hills, Villas and Historic Sites

Mozzo connects the hills of Bergamo with historic villas, oratories, cycle paths and a farmers’ market offering local and organic produce. Part of the municipality of Mozzo lies within the perimeter of the “Parco dei Colli”.

Hills, Views and Cycle Paths

A foothill of the Bergamo hills extends into the municipality of Mozzo and reaches elevations of up to 357 m. From the hilltops, there are views of the old walled city of Bergamo, the modern city, the plain and the Brembo Valley. This makes it possible to read the landscape in different directions: city, plain and valley appear together in a panoramic natural setting.

For your cycling plans, the Ciclovia dei Colli e del Brembo is a defining feature. Its main loop is approximately 46 km long. The cycle route passes Mozzo’s vineyards and the green cycle path at the foot of Monte Gussa. The approximate length of the main loop helps classify the route as a standalone option, while the vineyards and cycle path define the landscape character of this section. On a cycling tour, the approximate length of the main loop can be factored into planning breaks and the day’s overall distance.

Medieval Traces and Villas

The historic centre of Mozzo di Sopra preserves significant elements of medieval and rural fortification architecture. Mozzo di Sopra also retains a Gothic portal from the vanished Church of San Lorenzo.

Villa Albani in Mozzo is an 18th-century villa with an Italian garden. Villa Lochis – “La Pinacoteca” – was built in 1840 to a design by the Ticino architect Fontana. In the grounds of Villa Bagnada stands a public oratory dedicated to Saint Francis, dating from 1661. At Villa Dorotina, there is the 17th-century Oratory of San Giuseppe, decorated with frescoes. The architectural range therefore extends from villas and gardens to religious buildings from different periods. In Mozzo, visitors can use the dates 1661, the 17th century, the 18th century and 1840 as a chronological reference for the history of the buildings.

La Porta del Parco: Gardens, Events and Market

La Porta del Parco includes a vineyard and an orchard. It also features social and community gardens, as well as a children’s playground. The site is connected to walking and cycling paths for excursions. For an outing by bicycle or on foot, the site can be included in the planning because it is connected to both types of path.

Cultural, artistic, workshop and recreational events take place at La Porta del Parco. A farmers’ market offering local and organic produce is held there on Saturday mornings. Anyone wishing to specifically include the farmers’ market in Mozzo in their plans should schedule that part of the outing for Saturday morning.
