Calvisano between Palaces, Churches and Everyday Culture
Calvisano combines an impressive architectural history with a historic centre whose old houses, arcades, lanes and small squares shape the town.
Palazzo Lechi and the Architecture of the Town
One of the main attractions is Palazzo Lechi. It was built between 1723 and 1730 at the behest of the Polini brothers. The building is an unfinished rural palace and has two of the four towers originally planned.
Palazzo Lechi includes the large Brolo, a garden and orchard area surrounded by walls with six towers. The palace, Brolo and fortification elements thus form an ensemble comprising an unfinished rural palace, a garden and orchard area, and walls with six towers.
Churches, Frescoes and Art History
The parish church of San Silvestro papa e San Michele Arcangelo acquired its present Baroque appearance through extensive alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is accessible to people with mobility impairments. This means that the religious building combines a clearly recognisable historical development with accessibility for people with mobility impairments.
The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, known as dei Disciplini, dates from the late 15th century and was initially built as an oratory for the local Disciplini brotherhood. Inside, a cycle of frescoes covers almost the entire walls and vault. The scale of this painted decoration therefore cannot be reduced to a single painting or an isolated altar area.
The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is no longer used regularly for services. It is an important cultural heritage site in the history of the local Renaissance and is used for guided tours and events. The altar of Saint Catherine in the Chiesa Parrocchiale di S. Silvestro also contains a painting by Girolamo Romanino.
Historic Centre and Orientation
The Torre Civica was built in the 18th century, specifically in 1700, on the southern gate of Calvisano’s former town wall. It is a highly visible landmark at the entrance to Calvisano’s historic centre.
The Museo della civiltà contadina di Calvisano continues to host temporary exhibitions and carry out research on the local area.
Festivals, Landscape and Local Specialities
The Fiera agricola and Sagra della Beata Cristina take place every year in Calvisano. The landscape around Calvisano also preserves traces of Roman land surveying, known as centuriation. Those interested in the connection between local history and the landscape can therefore include both the built-up town centre and the historic structures of the surrounding area in their travel plans.
Every year on 29 September, the ritual “Il pane di San Michele” is renewed in Calvisano. This fixed date gives the local annual cycle a specific cultural reference point. In addition, packages from the Calvisius Caviar Experience combine a visit with a tasting at renowned restaurants in the surrounding area.
