Brescia’s historical breadth is reflected in the monumental San Salvatore–Santa Giulia complex. It was founded in 753 AD by Desiderius, Duke of Brescia and later King of the Lombards. The Castello di Brescia is also a defining landmark: this fortified complex stands on Colle Cidneo, where traces of various ruling powers can still be seen today.

The Museo delle Armi Luigi Marzoli presents more than 700 objects relating to Brescian arms production from the 15th century to the beginning of the 19th century. It also houses one of Europe’s most important collections of antique weapons and armour, telling the story of Brescia’s long-standing and productive tradition of arms manufacturing. At the Musil – Museo del Ferro di Brescia, an interactive tour featuring finds, old photographs, models and audio and video installations provides an introduction to the world of ironworking. The visit also includes outdoor facilities designed to use the water power of the Bova canal, with the city’s only still-functioning waterwheel.

The Museo del Risorgimento Leonessa d’Italia divides its exhibition into eight sections and provides information in Italian and English. In an immersive box, visitors can relive the Ten Days of Brescia through visual material and stories about individual protagonists such as the patriot Tito Speri. The Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo traces a journey through art from the 14th century to works from the 19th century.

Landscapes, routes and views

The Parco delle Cave is a 967-hectare landscape park southeast of Brescia. Former quarry lakes, cycling and walking paths, and several important access points shape its layout; these include Lago Canneto, Lago Bose, Lago Gerolotto and Lago Fuserino. Three basins in the park are open to the public and feature cycling and walking paths as well as observation points for birdwatching.

The Castello di Brescia also combines history with a landscape experience: within the complex, paths and rooms lead to views of the slopes of the Ronchi, the valleys of the Brescian region, the Apennines and the Alps. In the wider region around Brescia, the Parco dell’Adamello offers an almost 1,000-kilometre network of routes. The Via delle Sorelle is a 130-kilometre-long hiking trail through 36 municipalities, with six recommended stages. It can be walked in both directions and passes through Brescia. For excursions focused on archaeology, there is the Parco di Naquane in Valle Camonica: it was established in 1955 as Italy’s first archaeological park and protects a complex of 104 large rocks featuring prehistoric and protohistoric rock carvings.

Brescian cuisine and special events

Dishes with a long tradition are part of the local identity. Casoncelli alla bresciana follow a culinary tradition dating back more than six centuries. The recipe for Spiedo bresciano received recognition as a Denominazione Comunale in March 2011 and is associated with the towns of Serle and Gussago.

A major event on the calendar is the 1000 Miglia. It takes place over four days, starts in Brescia, travels to Rome and returns nonstop to Brescia. Along the way, it follows ordinary roads that remain open to traffic.
