Puegnago del Garda: Hills, Lake Views and the Laghetti di Sovenigo

Hills, Greenery and Views of Lake Garda

Puegnago del Garda lies in the moraine hills of Valtenesi. Its elevated position offers impressive views of Lake Garda and Monte Baldo. Hills, woods, fields and vineyards surround the town of Puegnago sul Garda; as a result, the landscape is characterised by abundant greenery and open exposure to the sun. In the landscape around Puegnago, open views stand alongside the more closely structured areas of the hill country. The alternation of woods, fields and vineyards shows Valtenesi as a varied hilly landscape.

The Laghetti di Sovenigo

The landscape is particularly vivid at the Laghetti di Sovenigo. These are three small, impressive bodies of water above Puegnago sul Garda, near the border with the municipality of Gavardo. They lie among reeds and are of ancient moraine origin. Between the reeds and bodies of water, a landscape emerges that differs from the open fields and vineyards around the town. Lotus flowers and water lilies bloom at the Laghetti di Sovenigo in July and August. July and August therefore represent the main seasonal period for observing the lotus flowers and water lilies.

Remains of several prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements were found in the Laghetti di Sovenigo. The finds add traces of early settlement to the landscape. At the same time, the bodies of water are also known for sport fishing for carp and pike. Depending on personal interest, the focus here may therefore be on the plant life, early settlement history or fishing. The plant life, early settlement history and sport fishing open up different themes around the same bodies of water.

The Castello and Puegnago Fiera

The Castello di Puegnago adds a historical focus to the town. It is the ruin of an ancient fortification with an irregular ground plan. The tower of the Castello di Puegnago was converted into a bell tower. The ancient fortification and the bell tower represent two different historical functions here.

The municipality's cultural calendar also includes the annual regional event Puegnago Fiera.

Cycling Route and Arrival

The Puegnago del Garda–Polpenazze del Garda route is of interest to cyclists; after 1.2 km, it connects to the provincial Salò–Lonato cycle path. The distance to the connection can therefore be considered a separate section on a short cycling stage. The route can thus be viewed both as a short section to the connection and as part of a longer cycling trip. Parking facilities are available near the starting point of this route. Puegnago del Garda can also be reached by bus. The two pieces of information concern different starting points: the bus leads to the town, while the parking facilities are near the beginning of the cycling route. Arrival in the town and the start of the cycling tour can therefore be considered separately.
