Roncadelle between castle names and church art

Roncadelle combines tangible buildings with a local history revealed through names, churches and historical uses. The present-day Palazzo Guaineri is still known by local residents as „il castello“, meaning „the castle“. This designation reflects the local perception of the building without establishing any current function or accessibility. The parish church of San Bernardino was built in the 15th century and expanded in the 16th, 17th and 20th centuries. Its main altarpiece was created by Francesco Paglia in 1675. The architecture and artwork thus lead through several historical periods that can be read in a single church building.

Another trace reaches back significantly further: the old church of Santa Giulia has been documented since 15 May 1306. It probably corresponds to the building at Via S. Bernardino 52–56, on the corner of today's Via Gagarin. This cautious classification is important, as the connection with this building is not stated as an established fact.

Waterways and landscape in Roncadelle

The Seriola Porcellaga is also part of the development of the town. In Roncadelle, it was the most important irrigation network for more than five centuries. Its origins can be linked to a permit issued in 1391: Pecino Porcellaga received permission from the authorities of Brescia to build a seriola that would carry water from the Mella from the former Cobiato, today's Collebeato, to irrigate a large part of his properties west of the city.

In the past, the Mella provided fish, gravel, sand and water for irrigation. Together with the history of the Seriola Porcellaga, this shows how closely water, land use and the history of property ownership were connected. The park of Roncadelle Castle is also part of this landscape context: in 1960, it was placed under landscape protection because of its natural and scenic beauty.

Festivals and local orientation

On 20 May, the annual San Bernardino da Siena festival is celebrated with a well-attended religious procession. It is often complemented by a sagra in the town center, meaning a local festival. Roncadellestate is one of the traditional cultural events in Roncadelle. Those who view local culture not only through historical buildings but also through recurring festival traditions will find a second way to access the town here.

For calm, practical orientation, there is the Biblioteca Comunale di Roncadelle: it lends books for 30 days, as well as DVDs and board games for 15 days. The history of transportation is also connected with the Mella. A hospitium was located at its crossing on the main road between Brescia and Pavia.
