Serle: Karst Landscape, History and Regional Cuisine

Karst Landscape around the Altopiano di Cariadeghe

The Sentiero 530 del Carso Bresciano is a circular trail of approximately 66 kilometres that includes Serle. It is followed using the red-and-white trail markers bearing the designation “Sentiero 530 SCB”.

The Altopiano di Cariadeghe natural monument is classified as “partial, geomorphological and botanical”. At the same time, the Altopiano di Cariadeghe is a protected nature reserve extending over more than 500 hectares at an average elevation of 650 metres. The density of sinkholes is another distinctive feature: on the Altopiano di Cariadeghe, it reaches 250–300 per square kilometre. This places a landscape at the centre whose characteristics can be understood both through its extent and through its striking karst formations.

Guided visits can be organised for groups and school classes in the characteristic karst caves of the Altopiano di Cariadeghe. A local feature is the “Büs del lat”: natural or partly artificially created cavities that were used until a few decades ago to store milk and local dairy products. The caves and these former uses show two different sides of the same landscape – its natural form and the practical way people interacted with it.

Archaeological and Early Medieval Traces

The prehistoric settlement site of Fienile Rossino lies on the Cariadeghe plateau in Serle and yielded more than 1,600 artefacts. The finds from the site are dated to between 5750 and 5600 BC. Only a few words are needed here to place the site in its temporal depth: in this specific archaeological context, Serle’s history reaches far beyond the visible landscape of the present day.

Another historical reference point is the Monastero di San Bartolomeo. It was founded in 1039 and originally bore the name San Pietro in Monte. Excavations at the Monastero di San Bartolomeo uncovered significant Early Medieval structures and finds. If you want to combine nature and history, Serle therefore offers both prehistoric traces on the plateau and a monastery with an Early Medieval heritage.

Regional Cuisine in Serle

Serle also has its own culinary highlights. As part of the “Profumo di Spiedo” event series, restaurants and agriturismi in the town offer menus featuring authentic Brescia-style spit-roasted meat under the municipal designation “Serlese”. Marenello is sampled and sold at numerous gastronomic events organised by Pro Loco Serle.
