Anzano del Parco between Parkland and History

The Park of Villa Carcano

The Park of Villa Carcano extends along the slopes of a hill. From there, views stretch across Lake Alserio, the Grigne and Resegone. Covering more than 40 hectares, the grounds are remarkably extensive. They were laid out around 1810 in the style of a landscape park. The hillside location, size and design give Villa Carcano a distinct landscape character that differs from the historic buildings in the town center.

Lake, Islands and a Historic Structure

The main lake in the park is characterized by water lilies and wild fauna. It contains two small islands and a promontory crossed by a tunnel that was once navigable. The combination of water, vegetation and architectural traces makes this part of Villa Carcano a distinct landscape area. The tunnel explicitly points to a former use and should not be understood as a current passage for boats.

Villa Carcano and the Historic Center

The Del Lazzaretto Chapel is located at the northern edge of the park. In the historic center of Anzano del Parco, the entrance area of a former castle still remains. Visible grooves are regarded as evidence of a former drawbridge. Villa Carcano was built for Marchese Alessandro Carcano, based on a design by Leopold Pollack, between 1794 and 1795 on the site of an existing 17th-century country house. The park, villa and traces of the castle thus offer different perspectives on the town's architectural history.

Churches with Their Own History

The Church of the Addolorata was founded by the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, the Confraternita del Santissimo Sacramento. It was built as a small single-nave church with one bay, a vaulted ribbed cross vault and a semicircular apse. The church of Anzano, in its connection with Saint Michael, can be traced back to the 13th century. On October 26, 1562, it was consecrated by Monsignor Gerolamo Ferragatta on behalf of Carlo Borromeo. During the pastoral visit on April 25, 1574, it was described as a single-nave church with two altars and a ceiling supported by two large arches.
