Carlazzo between Nature Reserve and Cultural Heritage
Carlazzo offers a varied perspective on the landscape and history of the Lombardy Lakes region. Around Lago di Piano, protected nature, viewpoints, historic settlements, churches and evidence of former working life come together. Those looking for a hotel in Carlazzo can therefore tailor their stay to their own interests, choosing between observing nature, exploring cultural heritage and following historic routes.
Nature and Views at Lago di Piano
The Riserva Naturale Lago di Piano is a regional partial nature reserve, a Site of Community Importance and a special area of conservation in the EU with the code IT20202001. It covers the municipalities of Carlazzo and Bene Lario. The Monti di Gottro and Case Bilate area in Carlazzo is designated as a landscape of considerable public interest. The paths through Monti di Gottro and Case Bilate offer viewpoints overlooking Lago di Piano and the Ceresio.
A distinctive feature of the landscape is the Ponte del Saltone. It stands 136 metres above a narrow natural gorge carved by the River Cuccio. The Osservatorio Naturalistico also features a botanical educational walkway with information panels explaining the area's vegetation zones. In Carlazzo, both views of the lake landscape and a closer exploration of its plant life are therefore central attractions.
Village History and Regional Culture
The Museo Etnografico del Latte is housed in Carlazzo's original social dairy. It displays traditional equipment used to collect, store and process milk and butter. The Borgo di Castello offers a different perspective on the area's history: it lies on the summit of Montecchio overlooking Lago di Piano and preserves remains of the ring wall, a tower house with an underpass, and several closely packed houses.
The churches also preserve important evidence of the past. The Chiesa di San Giorgio in Gottro dates from the 12th century and is Romanesque in style. Its apse contains a fresco dating from the 15th century depicting Christ Pantocrator, surrounded by the four Evangelists, the Madonna and John the Baptist. The work is attributed to the brothers Cristoforo and Niccolò da Seregno. The Chiesa di Santo Stefano in Gottro houses an organ made in 1858 by “I. R. Fabbrica Nazionale Privilegiata D’Organi Fratelli Serassi di Bergamo”, one of the firm's masterpieces.
In the centre of Carlazzo, the parish church Parrocchia di Ss. Giacomo e Fedele stands on the slopes of Pidaggia, on the site of a former fortification. The Crotto di Castello in Carlazzo is part of the Alpi Lepontine territorial museum system. In the settlement of Bilate, which is protected as a landscape of considerable public interest, there is also the “Pretura” building, a noteworthy historic structure.
Historic Routes and Technology
The Via del Ferro is a themed route that follows historic paths through the Cavargna and Albano valleys in Lombardy and the Morobbia Valley in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Via the Motto della Tappa or Cima Verta, at 2,078 m above sea level, it leads to mining and ironworking sites. At Ponte Dovia, visitors can experience the ancient mule-track connection between Carlazzo and Cavargna. At Ponte Dovia and in the surrounding area, there are still functioning hydroelectric plants that were inaugurated in 1903.
