Gera Lario on Lake Como: Nature Reserve, Trails and Churches
Gera Lario on Lake Como combines a trail through the Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola Nature Reserve with a short walk through the Contrade, historic churches and the town’s harbor.
Natural area between Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola
The trail through the Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola Nature Reserve follows a flat unpaved road and takes about three hours. It can also be cycled. For planning your day, this trail should be treated as a separate nature section. Those planning to walk it should allow for the long time frame and the flat unpaved surface; the possibility of cycling provides a second way of getting around on this route. The trail therefore takes up a continuous section of the day.
A trail through the Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola Nature Reserve begins near the bridge over the Adda River on the SS 36, in a district of Gera Lario. In the protected area, you can observe its various ecosystem components and its hydrographic system at close range.
A short walk through Gera Lario
The walk Passeggiando tra le contrade di Gera Lario is easy and also suitable for families and people with reduced mobility. It begins and ends at Piazzale del Porto. The route is 2 km long and takes about 40 minutes without breaks. The combination of a manageable length, a fixed starting and ending point, and its easy rating makes it easier to fit into an individual daily schedule.
At 2 km and about 40 minutes without breaks, the walk is more compact in terms of time than the approximately three-hour trail through the nature reserve. Its fixed starting and ending point at Piazzale del Porto distinguishes it from the starting point of the longer trail near the bridge over the Adda River on the SS 36.
Churches from different periods
The Romanesque Chiesa di San Vincenzo was built at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. A much later construction phase belongs to the Chiesa Nostra Signora di Fatima: it was built between 1630 and 1634 in the center of Gera Lario.
The Chiesa Nostra Signora di Fatima was rededicated as the Santuario dei Pescatori in 1963. The same church houses an image of the Madonna from Fatima. Those interested in culture can compare the Romanesque Chiesa di San Vincenzo and the Chiesa Nostra Signora di Fatima based on their construction dates.
Harbor and remembrance on Lake Como
At Gera Lario’s marina, the Faro votivo was erected in 1957 in memory of the 1951 flood. The harbor of Gera Lario is the northernmost landing place on Lake Como. At the marina, a memorial to the 1951 flood and the northernmost landing place on Lake Como come together.
