Erba: Alpine Foothill Landscape, Nature and History
Erba lies at the foot of the Lombard Pre-Alps on the Piano d’Erba. The alluvial plain stretches between Lago di Alserio and Lago di Pusiano, providing the town with a geographical setting where landscape, trails and cultural history come together closely.
Nature and trails around Erba
The Valle Bova Nature Reserve encompasses gorges, rock faces, caves, forests and wetlands. The peregrine falcon breeds in this diverse natural setting. A dense network of trails leads into the heart of the valley to the Orrido di Caino, creating a tangible connection between outdoor activity and the reserve’s distinctive landscape features.
A described trekking route also begins in Erba itself: Il sentiero delle scale is 2 kilometres long and leads from Erba to Albavilla. The Strada dell’acqua route can begin at the Lambrone sports centre. Both names are therefore useful reference points for planning a trip that consciously incorporates trails and landscape.
Museums, villas and sacred buildings
The Museo Civico di Erba presents the history of the area from the geological eras through prehistory and the Roman and medieval periods to the modern age. Villa Amalia was built in 1801 on the site of the former S. Maria degli Angeli convent. The villa houses Giuseppe Bossi’s painting Aurora; the park also contains a bust of Parini by Giuseppe Franchi.
Villa Majnoni includes an extensive publicly accessible park with a small temple from the Royal Villa of Monza. The origins of the Chiesa di Sant'Eufemia in Incino date back to the mid-5th century. Its Romanesque bell tower dates from the 12th century, while inside there is a 16th-century wooden crucifix in the Giottesque style.
Today, only a ruin remains of the Rocca Villincino; it is listed among the national monuments. The enclosed vaulted portal preserves an elegant bifora with a column made of Candoglia marble. The Rocca also includes the Pusterla, a stone tower with small pointed-arch windows and a rustic loggia.
The Buco del Piombo contains extensive wall structures of great archaeological interest, dating to around the year 500. Access to its interior is possible only with a guided tour. The Eremo di S. Salvatore is an important monumental complex from the 15th and 16th centuries. It includes frescoes by Michelino da Besozzo and others, a cloister from the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century, and an access avenue lined with cypress trees.
The Chiesa di Carpèsino is a single-nave church from the 14th century with a rib-vaulted apse and traces of frescoes from different periods. The Castello di Pomerio is a fortified building dating from the 11th to the 13th century; remains of its entrance tower have survived.
Local tradition in Incino
The Sagra del Masigott is a traditional festival in Erba’s Incino district and takes place on the third Sunday in October. Local specialities are served at the Sagra, and an Albero della Cuccagna is held. This also gives local festival culture a permanent place alongside nature, architecture and archaeology.
