Pizzighettone between the Adda and Fortress Walls

River, Ring of Walls and Casemates

A ring of walls dating from the 16th century surrounds the historic centre and is approximately 2 km long. Inside the walls are interconnected rooms with barrel vaults: the casemates. This means the fortified structure does not remain abstract, but reveals itself through its preserved rooms and passageways.

Towers with a Tangible History

The history of the fortress includes the Polveriera San Giuliano and two distinctive towers. The Polveriera has been preserved almost completely intact; its four brick-built buttresses were intended to direct the pressure wave upwards in the event of an explosion. The Torre del Governatore is a square tower northeast of the castle and is identified with the ancient Porta Remello. The Torre del Guado served as a prison for King Francis I of France for approximately fifty days in spring 1525.

Churches and Art

In the Museo delle Prigioni, graffiti carved or written into the cells can be seen, bearing witness to the young people who were imprisoned there.

Local Traditions throughout the Year

The culinary tradition of Fasulìn de l’öc cun le cùdeghe is maintained every year between the end of October and the beginning of November; local women prepare an authentic dish. In the walled town, the Mercatino dei Nonni takes place regularly on the third Sunday of every month. Pizzighettone thus combines seasonal food culture with a recurring market date.

Cycling, Nature and the Adda

Cycling circuits from Pizzighettone lead through green spaces and natural areas; they are connected to the cycle-path network between the Province of Cremona and the Province of Lodi. The official Morta di Pizzighettone nature trail leads around the Morta di Pizzighettone. On the water, the classic trip on the Adda follows a circular route without intermediate stops.
