San Giovanni in Croce: Discover Villas, Parks and Churches

San Giovanni in Croce combines a multifaceted architectural history with parkland, religious art and its own theater. An FS railway station provides additional orientation for arriving visitors.

Villa Medici del Vascello and its history

Villa Medici del Vascello originated as a fortress built in 1407 at the behest of Cabrino Fondulo, the lord of Cremona. This early connection between power, fortification and local history provides visitors with a clear historical starting point.

In the second half of the 15th century, Villa Medici del Vascello began to transform from a fortress into an aristocratic residence. This change makes the complex particularly interesting for anyone interested in the development of historic buildings and the traces left by different eras.

Park, lake and Tempio delle Nereidi

The park of Villa Medici del Vascello covers 12 hectares. It includes small temples in various architectural styles as well as a curving lake.

The Tempio delle Nereidi stands on the lake's northern shore, on a small rise in the park. The building formerly served as an aviary. The Tempio delle Nereidi is easily accessible from various points in the garden of Villa Medici del Vascello, making it a natural part of exploring the park.

The park is also home to a heron colony comprising grey herons, little egrets, black-crowned night herons and cattle egrets.

Churches and sacred art

The parish church of San Giovanni in Croce preserves a late Gothic fresco from the church of San Zavedro. The same parish church also houses a 16th-century polyptych attributed to Tommaso Aleni and originating from the church of San Zavedro.

The church of San Zavedro itself dates from the Late Gothic period and features a central rose window and a deep apse. It is considered the oldest religious building in San Giovanni in Croce. This makes it possible to appreciate both the architectural form and the surviving artworks of this church in one place.

The Oratorio della Santissima Trinità is an example of a church designed according to the rules issued by San Carlo Borromeo for the construction of new religious buildings. For visitors interested in culture, this provides another way to engage with religious architecture and its formal order.

Theater and paths through the complex

The Teatro Comunale Cecilia Gallerani is also part of the area's history. It was established in 1923 and inaugurated in its present form in 1983. The time between its establishment and its current form points to a distinct development within the cultural life of San Giovanni in Croce.

Nearly all the historic paths in the park of Villa Medici del Vascello have been rediscovered and restored. Those who explore the complex on foot can therefore experience the park not only through its buildings and lake, but also through its historic network of paths.
