Discover Soncino: Fortress Walls, Printing Art and Nature

Soncino combines an almost completely preserved town wall, significant buildings from the Sforza period, an unusual printing history and protected natural areas. Town Walls, Rocca and Churches

The almost completely preserved town wall of Soncino encloses the historic town centre on the natural ridge. It is approximately 2 km long and dates from the Sforza period. The Rocca Sforzesca comprises two fortified courtyards and four significant towers: the keep, the round tower and two twin towers. It was built from 1473 onwards in less than three years, entirely of brick, and served as a military outpost for defence against the Republic of Venice.

The religious buildings also reach far back into history. The Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo was built in 1300 on the remains of a pilgrim hospice dating from the 12th century. According to historical tradition, the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta is considered the oldest pieve in the Diocese of Cremona; it is said to date back to the beginning of the 5th century. It contains four Christian relics: the Holy Thorn, a particle of the True Cross, the Holy Nail and the Holy Crib. Construction of the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie began in 1492, and the present church was subsequently built in 1501. It is completely furnished with works by Giulio Campi, Francesco Scanzi, and Bernardino and Francesco Carminati da Lodi. The municipal timetable for the period from 1 July 2026 lists the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie as temporarily closed due to restoration work.

Printing, Silk and Archaeology

According to local tradition, the Museo della Stampa – Casa degli Stampatori “Soncino” is located on the site of the former printing house of the Jewish Soncino family. The former printing house of the Soncino family associated with the Museo della Stampa printed the first complete Hebrew Bible in 1488. The ground floor of the museum is accessible to people with disabilities and reduced mobility.

The Museo della Seta is located in the former filanda. Historical equipment there illustrates silk production from the procurement of silkworm eggs to the reeling of the silk. A separate room is dedicated to bacological establishments, or seme-bachi establishments, for the production of silkworm eggs. The Museo Civico Archeologico Aquaria was founded in 1979 by the local Gruppo Archeologico Aquaria to protect, enhance and promote the archaeological heritage in the north-eastern part of the Province of Cremona. Its chronological and thematic tour presents the settlement history of the area from prehistory to the advanced 17th century.

River Landscape and Protected Nature

The landscape around Soncino includes several distinctive natural areas. Bosco di Barco is an oriented nature reserve in the municipalities of Orzinuovi and Soncino. The Bosco de l'Isola nature reserve also includes Soncino and is classified as ZSC-ZPS IT2060015. Parco del Tinazzo lies north of Soncino near the Oglio River and historically served to monitor a ford across the river. Its original viridarium only took on the form of a proper park in the 18th century. In the 15th century, the chapel of Santa Maria del Tinazzo, also known as Santa Maria della Neve, was added to the area.

The Torrazzo lies in the vicinity of Soncino and is classified as a natural arch. Porta Ombriano lies in the wider regional surroundings of Soncino and is likewise classified as a natural arch.
