Casteldidone between church art, castle history and Marubino

Casteldidone combines religious architecture, traces of a fortified past and culinary tradition. Church interior and historical traces

The Church of Saints Abdon and Sennen is the focal point. The neoclassical building has a Latin cross plan, a large dome with a skylight, three side chapels on each side and a single nave. The present building was constructed around 1840 over an older church dating from the 15th century. It was designed by Luigi Voghera; the façade displays vague Palladian echoes.

The Villa, also known as Castello Mina della Scala, was built at the end of the 16th century and later remodeled several times. The complex includes the Oratory of Sant'Antonio, dating from 1680. According to the description from 1309, the old castle of Casteldidone was a village surrounded by a moat, with a fortified tower. Its transformation gave rise to the Cascina Cavalca. Its upper section preserves remains of the castle tower; on the eastern side there is a cornice dating from the 15th century. The castle, cascina and surviving structures thus represent several historical stages in the development of the town.

Festivals and flavors from Casteldidone

On July 30, Casteldidone celebrates the patronal feast in honor of Saints Abdon and Sennen, the Persian martyrs and patron saints of the town. Religious celebrations, including a procession, are combined with traditional secular and social events for the entire community.

The Sagra del Marubino celebrates Marubino, a traditional meat tortellino served in three broths. At the festival, it is prepared by experienced hands according to a traditional recipe. The event received the “Sagra di Qualità” award from UNPLI in the Senate of the Republic.

Another local specialty is melon cultivation. It began in 1958, when a farming family from Viadana introduced this crop for the first time in an area where it had not previously been grown. In this way, festival cuisine and agriculture complement Casteldidone's architectural profile with a clear connection to regional products.

Cultural experiences and regional orientation

At Castello Mina Della Scala, a new and innovative project includes theatrically staged guided tours. The regional cycling tour “Nelle Terre tra Oglio e Po” is connected with Villa Mina della Scala; the villa is one of the listed sights along the route. It is located on the road between Rivarolo Mantovano and San Giovanni in Croce, opposite Casteldidone. The two perspectives complement each other: the project focuses on staged cultural interpretation, while the cycling tour creates a regional connection with a historic destination.
