Brivio: History and Nature on the Adda

Brivio brings together churches, museums and landscapes along the Adda River. At the centre are the remains of the ancient and imposing Castello di Brivio, situated overlooking the Adda. The Museo Casa Natale di Cesare Cantù and several religious sites complement this cultural focus. At the same time, the municipal circular route and the Palude di Brivio offer views of riverbanks, stretches of water and wet woodlands. Church history and cultural heritage

The Pieve of Brivio, which is associated with the Chiesa dei SS. Sisinio, Martirio e Alessandro, is first mentioned in 966. The oldest published document mentioning the existence of a Christian community in Brivio dates from May 960. The new Chiesa dei SS. Sisinio, Martirio e Alessandro was completed in 1760. In the town, you can therefore encounter different periods of ecclesiastical history—from the earliest written mention to the construction of this church.

The Museo Casa Natale di Cesare Cantù preserves personal belongings, furnishings and important editions of Cesare Cantù's extensive scholarly, literary and historical works. The museum is located in Cesare Cantù's birthplace in the historic centre of Brivio, near the Adda River. For visitors interested in culture, this site combines biographical insights with the history of the centre, without limiting you to a single subject.

The Antiquarium in the atrium of the Palazzo Comunale in Brivio also focuses on early evidence: among the exhibits are an ara, amphorae and a faithful reproduction of the Capsella di Brivio. In the Chiesa di San Leonardo, the Cappella della Madonna delle Grazie contains a fresco from the 16th-century tradition, probably originating from the Leonardesque school. The Chiesa di San Leonardo is a FAI cultural heritage site.

Palude di Brivio and paths along the river

For a walk connected with the river, the 3.8-kilometre municipal circular route “Brivio e il suo Fiume” is suitable. The Palude di Brivio complements this landscape with riverbanks, gravel bars and stands of willows, reed and sedge areas, stretches of water with water lilies and pond lilies, as well as wet black alder woodlands. Depending on whether you focus on cultural heritage or riverside landscapes, the emphasis of your walk will shift. The route and the Palude can therefore be understood as different perspectives on Brivio.

Along the Adda

Another way to experience the Adda is the Addarella boat trip: it lasts 45 minutes and starts and ends in Brivio. CAI Route 119 “Lungo l'Adda da Brivio” includes a car park on Via Lungo Adda Monfalcone in Brivio. These reference points provide two different ways to plan your time by the river: a trip with a set duration and a route associated with a car park.
