Limonta between the Lakeside and Sacred Buildings

Limonta combines a peaceful lakeside landscape with historic and more recent ecclesiastical architecture. The lakeside defines the landscape, while the historic town centre creates a different architectural accent. The Madonna del Moletto and the churches in the town reflect different periods of construction, from a 17th-century chapel to the present-day Chiesa di S. Dionigi, built in the 1920s.

Churches with Their Own History

On the lakeside of Limonta stands the Santuario della Vergine Annunciata, detto Madonna del Moletto. It was built in 1606. The Madonna del Moletto is a small chapel from the 17th century, richly decorated with frescoes. Its lakeside location and lavish fresco decoration shape the chapel in different ways. The wording detto Madonna del Moletto brings together both names for the same sacred building.

The Chiesa dei Santi Ambrogio e Bernardo is located in the historic town centre. Its reconstruction was completed in 1673. The church also contains a polyptych, meaning a multi-panel artwork, from the late 15th century, attributed to the workshop of Felice Scotti from Como. The church interior thus combines the completed reconstruction with an older work of art. The polyptych dates from before the reconstruction.

The present-day Chiesa di S. Dionigi was built in the 1920s after the original building was demolished in 1923. It is therefore one of Limonta’s more recent sacred buildings.

Lakeside Landscape and Nearby Destinations

The lakeside landscape of Limonta offers picturesque views and is ideal for anyone seeking peace and unspoilt nature. Alongside the churches, the lakeside therefore forms a distinct landscape highlight.

The Museo Moto Guzzi museum and the Cima del Costone summit are located in the surroundings of Limonta. Museo Moto Guzzi is a museum, while Cima del Costone is a summit near Limonta. Both destinations broaden the perspective beyond the sacred buildings and the lakeside landscape.

Hiking Routes with Different Levels of Difficulty

The Sentiero degli Olivi comprises several paths that cross the coast of Oliveto Lario. Depending on the starting point and the chosen level of difficulty, they offer different hiking experiences. The coast of Oliveto Lario provides the shared geographical setting for the individual paths. When planning a day of hiking, the starting point and the chosen level of difficulty are therefore the two decisive variables.

Practical Information by the Water

At the public landing stage Limonta–Madonna del Moletto, the maximum mooring time for pleasure boats is two hours. This information concerns the mooring time of the pleasure boats, not the duration of a journey. Anyone docking there with a pleasure boat must plan their stay within this time window.
