Cremella between the Valletta Landscape and Architectural Heritage

Cremella brings together landscape and architectural heritage. The municipality is set in an environment of plateaus at different elevations, waterways and scattered woodlands. The town’s architectural heritage includes the Chiesa dei Santi Sisinio, Martirio e Alessandro in the town centre, several villas and rural buildings. Those interested in culture will find tangible points of connection here with the natural environment, ecclesiastical architecture, monastic history and secular architecture.

Landscape and the Valletta Park

The area around Cremella is part of the Parco della Valletta. The differences in elevation between the plateaus give the landscape a tiered structure, while waterways and scattered woodlands create further natural features. The park of Villa Del Bono lies on the eastern slope of the hill of Cremella and overlooks the Bevera Valley. The Sentiero del Vai also has a distinct landscape character: it is surrounded by one of the last chestnut woods remaining in the Valletta.

Another spatial perspective is offered by the route between Barzago and Besana. It crosses the Parco della Valletta from north to south, passes the Cascina Montegregorio and runs through the town centre of Cremella. The Cascina Monte Gregorio is considered one of Cremella’s oldest rural buildings. This route is relevant when planning a trip to Italy because it connects the Valletta landscape with Cremella’s town centre. The route’s north–south direction provides a clear path through the Valletta.

Church in the Town Centre

The Chiesa dei Santi Sisinio, Martirio e Alessandro stands in the town centre. It can be reached via a staircase leading to the church square. Its rendered façade is decorated with mouldings and surrounds made of Serizzo. On the surrounds and mouldings, Serizzo forms a stone counterpart to the render. At the same time, the church was part of the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro. Those interested in culture will find two tangible points of connection at the church: access via a staircase to the church square and its former affiliation with the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro.

Behind the altar of the Chiesa dei Santi Sisinio, Martirio e Alessandro is a fresco lunette depicting the Crucifixion, probably dating from the 16th century.

Villas and Historic Buildings

Several secular buildings also shape the cultural character of the town. The Villa Kramer, Sessa, Pizzi complex dates from the early 18th to the 19th century. The complex therefore spans several historical periods. Villa del Bono is considered architecturally significant and is protected under a preservation order issued by the Soprintendenza. Cascina Baciolago was built by the Visconti di Modrone family and is also known as Casale Visconteo or La Fabbrica.
