Molteno between Ceppo Hill and Villa Rosa

Molteno combines a valley landscape surrounded by hills with prominent reminders of its local history. The Bevera River flows through the valley, while Ceppo, a predominantly rocky hill, is home to the oldest inhabited settlement core. Those visiting Molteno therefore encounter a place where landscape, architectural history and local events are closely connected.

Ceppo, Town Centre and Geological Landscape

The hills of Molteno and Sirone form an extensive alluvial fan composed of conglomerate of marine origin. There are also extensive alternating layers of consolidated gravel and sandstone. This geological character is part of the area’s distinctive landscape and complements the view of the valley crossed by the Bevera.

The parish church of Molteno stands at the summit of Ceppo Hill. The Church of San Rocco is located on higher ground in the historic town centre and can be reached directly via the main road that runs through the town. Ceppo and the town centre thus bring together several important landmarks for orientation: the oldest inhabited settlement core, the parish church and the elevated Church of San Rocco.

Villa Rosa and Its Public Park

Another focal point of Molteno is the Villa Rosa complex. It comprises several buildings constructed in different periods, as well as the public park of the same name. The first core of the later Villa Rosa building was created between 1849 and 1855. Its varied construction history and adjoining park make Villa Rosa a distinct destination within the town’s history.

Villa Rosa Park was designed according to the principles of an English garden. Its features include, among other things, a pavilion, a former swimming pool with a turtle enclosure and a green theatre. The park thus combines garden design, architectural elements and a tangible connection with the turtles living there.

This connection is also at the heart of the annual Tarta-Day. The event in Villa Rosa Park is dedicated to the health of the turtles living there. At Tarta-Day, visitors can observe the cleaning and emptying of the turtle pond. Local Event and Railway Station History

The traditional Sagra di San Rocco takes place from 14 to 17 August 2026 at the Oratorio di San Giovanni Bosco in Molteno.

The railway station also has an important historical role. It opened in 1888 when the Como–Lecco railway line was completed. With the establishment of the line to Monza, it became a junction station in 1911. These two years mark the station’s development from its opening to its role as a junction station and add an aspect of transport history to the picture of Molteno.
